Living Room Layout help

Hi, I'm posting on behalf of my wife - she hates our living room layout. The issue is, the West wall has the fireplace in the middle, the North wall has the staircase railing, the South wall has a window and front door, and the East wall is extremely long and plain. Before this picture, we had the TV in the Northwest corner, a sofa along the long East wall, and the loveseat where it is now. It looks like the TV was meant to be placed above the fireplace but I really hate that and our LR isn't big enough to sit far enough back. We might get some book cases for the sides of the TV but I'd rather not buy them if she is still going to hate the layout. She has also mentioned putting an armoire in the Northwest corner, which would let us close the doors to cover the tv when not in use. If it's not covered, your eye is instantly drawn to the TV when walking in the front door. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

    Here's another view.

Do you not like each other lol? I'm only asking because the seating is so farrr away from each other. The room is actually pretty nice I think. I have a question; does this have to be a TV room? Is there another room to use as a TV room?

Ha I know, we feel so far away and tossing the remote back and forth is hard on it! When the TV was in the corner the sofas were much closer. The dog has a nice big area to play with his toys this way though!

Yes for now it has to be the TV room. Once the basement is finished I'd like to make this room a quiet(er) formal living room and put the tv in the family room downstairs. But for now this is our only option.

I'd put the television in the corner to the left of the fireplace and create an L with the sofa and loveseat facing the fireplace.

Put the rug running the long way from the fireplace towards the t.v. wall. Then move both sofas forward so they are right up to the rug. You may want to use the biggest one opposite where it is right now. Find a nice coffee table to put between both sofas and on the rug. Move the t.v up a little closer to the door, it would be great if it was directly across from the fireplace. Now, if all that works and it looks a little empty then you should place sofa table behind one of the sofas, the one closest to the staircase and stage it with books, candles or whatever you like, a lamp would be perfect so you could read on the couch. It's a start.

I agree with k9arlene. An l-shaped configuration will cozy up the room and serve to create a pseudo entryway.

My first thought was what k9arlene and deeinohio suggest. The TV could go either in either the NW corner or the SW corner. If in the NW, I agree with your wife that it should be behind doors so it's not the first thing you see when you walk into the room. Maybe even a TV on a swing-arm?

A long, shallow table on the long wall would be nice as well. Or a sofa table behind the couch. Something so the space between the back of the sofa and the long wall isn't empty.

I came to the same conclusion as karlene, but then I think having the seating side on to the tv isn't that great for viewing and the L shape config would work better and be more practical for watching tv too, and it would bring the seating back closer together. Is this how you had it arranged before?

Right now the seating is too far apart, the tv is right there when you open the door, and you're seating isn't angled at the tv at all for comfortable viewing. It's a real pain when you have a front door that leads straight into a LR like that, my house is the same because you're stuck with that awkward walkway.

For the size tv you have you're sitting too far away.

I think I'd put the tv to the right of the fireplace. IMO, the entry is going to make furniture placement difficult if the tv is to the left. Move the rug closer to the FP, and place the large sofa facing the FP so that the back of the sofa is in line with the entry. Then pull the loveseat forward to make an L with the sofa.

You could then place a long, shallow table along the East wall with large artwork above it.

I have a similar situation in my apartment as the front door opens right into the living room. Here's my suggestion; place the TV on the staircase wall where the sofa is now. Replace your current entertainment center with either a pair of matching units, or with one very long one, so that you have one long solid cabinet along the bottom of the entire wall. Then hang framed pictures of varying sizes around the TV. This will basically make the TV blend into all the other rectangular frames, and it will be far less noticeable. (see my link for a visual) Move the couch opposite the fireplace, and leave the love seat in front of the window but place a sofa table behind it, to move it forward and make the seating area a little more intimate.

Here is a link that might be useful:

a)Try the TV in the corner by the front window. Place the entertainment center under the window -- and the TV itself on the right-hand side -- angled toward the seating area. In this spot -- the TV is NOT the first thing that vistors see when they enter the house.

b)Then the loveseat can sit along the wall where the TV now sits ... add artworks over the loveseat.

c)Remove the area rug -- although it IS pretty -- it is too small and patterned for the current space -- which means that the viewers eye see that rug as the main focal point.

d)Find a round ottoman or coffee table to break up all of the "rectanglar" lines of the room. This new piece will also tie the sofa to the loveseat ....
