I have soapstone. Florida Joshua recommended just my regular dishwater, which is what I do. Much to my surprise, I'm not oiling (everyone in the family prefers it in the non-oiled state), so it really doesn't effect that.

I oil my soapstone to take it from the grey color to black. I use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean my soapstone. However, be aware that a soap product will remove the oil and you will find yourself re-oiling if you like that dark black color. If you choose to oil, there is suppose to be a wax type product on the market now which is said to maintain that black color longer than oiling. Can't remember name of it now.

For honed marble, I LOVE 409 Stone Cleaner spray. It's available at my local grocery store for about 4 dollars. I spray it directly on honed marble and granite and wipe off. It's a breeze. I mixed some with warm water and cleaned a honed marble floor. It's really great. I think 409 should put me on their payroll, I'm always talking about the Stone Cleaner.

I use anything I have on hand to clean my soapstone. This usually means 409 or Lysol Kitchen spray. Neither of these seems to have any impact on the oil.

The only thing I've found that does remove the oil is Dawn--at least before the oil patina developed. If whoever was doing dishes splashed Dawn onto the counter, I would get spots where the oil wore off. Now, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I also used mouser divnity with marble and polished nickel this summer.. it was soo hard for me to choose a white from mouser. I would love to see a photo of how it looks. can you share some photos?

I just use soap and water on my soapstone. It does the trick!
