Kitchen sink advice,..please

I have a three week time frame to make a decision on a kitchen sink. Right now I have stainless steel, although it's almost 30 years old, it looks like new...kind of. :)

I want an aproned farm sink. My builder is hell bent on telling me if I drop a pan in there (which I did this morning in the SS sink), that the sink will break or chip. I told him there is NO way I'm going back to SS.

I did a web search and it seems like most of the farm sinks are made with Fire Clay. I can't find any cast iron sinks.

Anyone here with a fire clay sink? If so, does it hold up well with klutzes like me?

If you have a cast iron farm sinnk, what is the brand name, and does it also hold up well?

I may be ending up ordering my sink through the internet, the custom cabinet guy said he gets a lot of them this way.

Hi. I don't have a cast iron sink, or an apron sink, but I do remember seeing them when I was looking for a new sink a few years ago. I remember Kohler had cast iron sinks. Below is a link to their Apron-style models. Looks like the Hawthorne and the Dickinson are both cast iron. I do know that when you go with cast iron you need to reinforce your cabinets because they are so heavy. I'm sure your contractor is aware of that. Good luck - I hope you find something you like.

Thanks, I'll check them out! I wonder how sturdy fire clay is? The word "clay" makes me uneasy. lol

    Oakleyok,
I just had a Franke Fireclay sink installed and I have no idea how it'll wear. (sure looks good!) There is a fairly new thread on the kitchen board where one of the installers said he'd never work with fireclay again. Several people chimed in and said they have the fireclay and love it.
I'm hoping for the best! :)

Head over to the Kitchens forum. The vast majority of the posters there are "into" the farm house style sinks. (At least that's how it appears to me.) Do some searches as there are lots of threads on this. They're also really friendly and helpful should you not find the answer you're looking for.

I agree the best source of information you can find will be on the kitchen's forum. We put in SS in our remodel, though from reading there many are very happy with their fireclay sinks.

Another recommendation to ask over on the Kitchens Forum. Last year when we were doing a total reno on our kitchen, I got tons of great info, advice, pictures, as well as online sites to order stuff at great prices. I saved a lot of time and money because of that forum! We ended up going with the Silgranit sink in anthracite. I'm a bit of a klutz, too, and very picky about how my sink looks on a day to day basis and I love it! You really can't damage this sink unless you take a hammer to it and it always looks great. I can't remember if they come in the apron style, though. Good luck finding the right one for you!

I had SS in the last house. Went with Blanco Silgranit in this one. Neither are apron front, though I love the style for aesthetic and functional (I'm short!) reasons. I would be certain that your cabinet guy or GC really knows how to install the apron front sink -- it is not a "normal" install.

I suspect that when a contractor tries to steer you away from something for a reason that doesn't quite hold water (pardon the pun) maybe there is another reason he's trying to dissuade you -- like he has never installed that kind of widget before and doesn't want to figure it out. I personally try to make choices such that I am not the guinea pig, IYKWIM!
