I could only use the shelve and brackets, is that possible and a different finish?

I have a build-in bookcase on either side of the fireplace and a 4x4 stone/tile surround, recessed into the wall and leaves about 4" of drywall with rounded corners in between the f.p. and bookcases. Help:)
I like the style of this picture.
