Blue tape pulls the oil (if you have oiled) right off the stone. Solution then is to reoil the marks.

But your counters are unoiled. Are you keeping them that way? If not, go ahead and oil and all will be well. Otherwise, maybe something like Bon Ami on the whole area?

We got those, too. I think we used Barkeeper's Friend to get rid of them, and then oiled everything out.

I know this is an old post, but I have this too on my soapstone countertops. Wondering how you were able to remove the tape lines. We tried oiling them again, but the lines still show.

Did you have any resolution for this? I have something similar - clear tape left on quartzite that has leeched into the stone. Stone remediator has tried poutice, ground on it, nothing is taking the tape marks away. Do I just have to replace at this point?

My tape marks came off after they reoiled and I really rubbed that area with a microfiber cloth. I have soapstone though not quartize. Good luck!

I remain exasperated that the stoners can continue to sell quartzite as a material suitable for countertops. Tape marks? Are you kidding me? Corian would have been strangled in its crib for such an offense, but the stoners get pass after pass after pass for this junk.

Also be careful with putting blue tape down on some hardwood floors. We built in 2021 and my engineered wood floors with a hard wax oil finish had a clear warning not to use blue tape. I had to constantly keep an eye on the painters as they worked around the house armed with blue tape!

This just happened to me. What helped?

Real soapstone will never stain, as it’s too dense to absorb anything. Any markings you see, are on top of the soapstone. Bon Ami, or Comet, and the back of a wet, blue Scotch scrubby sponge will remove any and all patina from the surface.

Quartzite is another matter. Asides from the seemingly ”bulletproof” Taj Mahal, other varieties have been known to have all kinds of absorption issues.

I had this problem with blue tape staining blue stone. After experimenting with many products, I found a solution. First, rub Goo Gone vigorously into the area and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This product is oily and will stain the stone, so try it in an inconspicuous area first. Then wipe up all of the residue with paper towels or terrycloth towel. The stone will have darkened, so then you will need to use 70% rubbing alcohol to lift the remaining oils. Rub it in or spray it on and buff it off with fresh paper towels or terrycloth towel. You may need to do it multiple times. Hope this helps someone.

I attempted to remove tape marks off my soapstone countertop by hand sanding. Using 3M 800 wetordry paper it was fairly easy to remove, however when dry wax was applied the line of tape was subtly visible. The sanding also honed the surface differently from the rest of the slab -- it can be seen at an angle in the photo. I'm guessing it's a good idea to do a final pass across the entire surface for a consistent finish even though when the dry wax is applied it disappears. Do you recommend more sanding to try to remove the tape residue or would it be better to try something else?

I’ve used even gentler scrubbing like bon ami. Having said that, it worked over time. I’ve come to see that my soapstone picks up other oils from food that “disappear” over time with soap and water. How much time you got ;^) ?

@Teemu Jaakkola maybe look into Tulikivi Care Cleaning Agent 4. It is designed specifically to lift stubborn soot, grease, and candle wax from soapstone without scratching it.

Another idea you can try:

Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda): Readily available in all European food and cleaning aisles, mixed with a drop of water or dish soap to create a safe, non-scratch DIY scouring paste.

The glue in the tape made discoloration, even when i get the glue off, the colour of the stone is changed, but only in the surface.. So theres not any actual dirt, its discolorated stone. Lucky its outside stairs, so that all the rain will consume the stone in a time and those marks will vanish, but still i want to try to make em go off sooner.
