Trash pullout- high vs. low attachment

I've seen models with the frame attached high and some low. Any difference between the two as far as function or durability? It seems like the higher one would be more stable because the door frame is attached close to where you are pulling to open the door. OTOH, you have to lift the garbage up over the higher rail to empty it.

I have 2 cans sitting on the floor of my pullout- they are very stable due to the side rails 5 inches high.

scrappy25: I was talking about the trash pullouts where the cabinet door is attached (so the door it acts like a drawer front). Is that what you have or do you open your cabinet door and have a regular pullout that you put your trash cans in?

good question to ask. I think it'd be easier if on the door... but I'm also afraid it would be wear and tear on the door ... each time i had to throw something out. and it's just me - 1 person. In a household of many I'd really be afraid of that. would probably buy an extra door.

My cabinet door (24 inches high, below a 6 inch high cutlery drawer) is attached to a deep drawer box that is at the bottom of the base cabinet, the sides of the drawer box are about 5 inches high, and the trash cans sit in that. I have a horizontal handle bar that pulls out the whole thing (door, drawer, and trash cans. Very sturdy and the cans fit snugly so they don't tip at all. The trick is finding good-fitting trash cans, I happened to find mine at Target. I have a 15 inch pullout with two trash cans. The cans are the size that you can line with the plastic bags that you get at the grocery store.I find this a good size because it gets emptied regularly enough that no smell ever builds up.

I don't think you have to worry about the door. If the original attachments wore out you could always rig up a separate attachment.

We also have the model where the bins sit inside a drawer box setup. We have found no problems with them.

I don't think it really matters which one you get, I think they'll both be fine.

We put our "Junk Drawer" above the trash pullout. For me, even though there's a solid wood divider b/w the trash & the drawer above, it rubbed me wrong to put food utensils or linens above the trash...but that's me...I'm sure it's perfectly fine to put whatever you want there!

Scrappy25 and Buehl: Did you use/convert a regular drawer base instead of on "official" trash pull-out? It seems like the officials models are pretty pricey for a glorified drawer.

I have a single of the type circuspeanut pictured. My trash cabinet is only a trash cabinet, so my unit is mounted higher. The concept of storing something above the trash did not compute for me.

I don't lift the can out, I take the bag out of the can.

Nothing overflows into the cabinet - which happens to every low mounted one I've ever seen. Over the course of a couple of years, pretty much nothing gets on the inner top of the cabinet either.

A door mounted one saves you agro, because you open one thing instead of opening a door and then pulling on something.

The high-mount places less torque on the door when opening; The more in line the effort (pull) is with the resistance (rollers/frame) the less force has to be translated through the intervening member (door).

I've been looking at these also, is there any difference between metal or wood? is the metal or chrome lighter in weight? One more sturdy? I think I've settled on a high mount from rev a shelf but am stuck on chrome or wood. Wood is much cheaper.

Mine was designed specifically as a trash pullout. You could get an unattached door & then buy the rest from a Rev-A-Shelf or other manufacturer's dealer & install it yourself....it would probably be less expensive.

The upper mounted type seems the most stable if a full size door is only attached to a small area. It just seems more logical to have the door attached close to where you will be pulling. OTOH, I was looking at Ikeafans.com and people there have all kinds of drawer pullouts with the full door attached to a bottom deep drawer and several shallow drawer boxes above (that are accessed once you pull out the door).

These all look like glorified drawers to me. I found a Ron Hazelton article about making a full height pullout that looked like a door with a door above. I'm using a 20" wide cabinet and I think I can design a box kind of like that but I'd offset the trash cans to one side (they are only 15" wide at the top) and have a separate narrow section open on one side that would function similar to a filler pullout.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ron Hazelton DIY trash pull-out

I will have an apron front farm sink. I had hoped there would be enough space to do this under it on the drain side. Does anyone have this done already or can you tell by looking under your sink to see if I can do that? I'll use a bathroom waste basket because the space is small and I don't have that much trash that I couldn't empty it every couple of days. If you don't think it would work on the drain side, would it fit on the other side? I'll have a sink with a drain on one end.

Circuspeanut: I love your cabinet and floor. And your trash cans, of course. Mine are top mount. We're not in our house yet, and I don't think the trash can drawer is finished (just saw it yesterday for the first time). My cabinet maker made it. It was an afterthought in my cabinet design, so it had to go between the sink and dishwasher. I guess that's probably where I would have put it anyway. Any pros/cons on placement? I seem to remember the cabinet guy saying in the high mounted ones there is opportunity for him to make a trash bag storage area . . .I will have to check on that and post some pics when its all finished. Thanks to everyone on all your trash can ideas!

I asked my KD since I had my choice. She said her orders are split 50/50 between the two styles. She personally has the high attachment so that's what I went with but the cabinets haven't arrived yet. For my shredder and paper recycle I went with a low attachment but that is an 18" deep cabinet.

Sounds like both are good options and personal preference may be a factor. I wonder if one is easier to install as an after market?

owls4me: I'm glad you brought up the shredder. Mine is plugged into my island right now and I was recently wondering what the heck I should do with it. I never thought about having it in a cabinet. Hmmm... I have an outlet in the pantry where I could put it once I move the recycling. But I just measured it and it would fit in the cabinets on the back side of my island, across from the desk area. That would probably be more convenient.

We have a hybrid - mix of both circus peanut & beul works very well and very stable

Our trash pullout has a low wooden base - very similar the one that Buehl posted - except that our slides are exposed. Googling around a bit, the slides appear to be the "Rev-A-Shelf" RV series. The front panel is screwed to the pull out base via the RV door mounting kit. Unlike the photos at the Rev-A-Shelf web site, the door mount kit was mounted a bit above the sliders - apparently to prevent a clearance issue with the wooden base.

With the door mount kit, the attachment is a bit higher up on the door than would otherwise be the case with the frame attached down low. This would seem to distribute the forces a bit better and in the long run might keep the door from getting loose. Time will tell.

So, switching it up just a bit away from where the frame is attached (higher would be more stable and probably easier to pull out), any thoughts on having the garbage pull out being the top pull out under the cabinets with the small drawer below? Depending on ones height, then one wouldn't have to reach down to pull it out. And one is closer to it when throwing stuff away so less chance of spillage. And easier to push garbage off the counter into the can without making a mess. I guess it could depend on what one needs the smaller drawer for on the top vs on the bottom.. I hadn't considered what some people are having an issue with... something in the small drawer right above the garbage! I don't think that would bother me. The only thing is, what would one put in the small drawer if it was under the garbage? Probably just garbage bags. I'd be more concerned with stuff falling into an underneath drawer than utensils or linens in a drawer above the garbage.

update: I had the cabinet makers put the garbage pullout on top with the small drawer below instead of the other way around. The love it!!! I’m tall so it makes sense plus all the other reasons I mentioned above. In my cabinet the garbage pullout is completely enclosed so nothing falls into the drawer below anyway.
