Pendant lighting dilemma

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I posted - mostly because I ran out of energy once the kitchen was functional ;) I have been looking and looking for some jewelry for my simple kitchen in the form of pendant lights and finally found some I like but I'm not sure which size to get. My island is 3x6 feet and my ceilings are 8 ft. The pendants come in three sizes - 17" (too big I think), 12" and 8" wide. I like the idea of the smallest ones - just don't want them to look weird - what do you guys think? Below are pics of my kitchen and of the pendant (I want the clear glass one)

I've been having a pendant debate myself. I called the lighting company to ask about a "rule of thumb" for sizes and height. Their advice was to blow up balloons to the corresponding inches and hang them from the ceiling.

My peninsula is 3' X 6 1/2' and I have two 10 inch pendants above it. I think it looks good. I took some paper and cut out the dimensions of the light I wanted and then held them up to the peninsula. Similar to what people do with balloons. I also would think that the 17" light is too big for your space. You picked out really cool lights! I don't think you could go wrong with two 12" or 8" ones. Good luck!

    Tia,

I definitely think the 17" pendant would be too large for your space. I think the 12" would be large also. You can't go wrong with the 8".. BTW, I love your pendants. Where did you find them?

    Neat lights!

    How many would you use?

    How low would you go?

How many bulbs in each fixture- ie how much light do they give off?

I have a 3 x 5.5 peninsula with 2 mini-pendants hung relatively low, and we love the light- we find now we like to sit and read there a lot.

So, my tendency would be for the smaller- 8" lights- would you go with 2 lights?

Thanks all. I spent time yesterday and today making mockups and I think the 8" would be fine (and a little cheaper LOL). Sweetd313 I found them leafing through an old issue of Before and After magazine from BH & G. Spent literally hours on the web searching for them. Finally called up the interior designer listed in the magazine and got the name of the store where she purchased them. Called the store and of course they just quoted me a price and didn't tell me the designer but I looked at a couple of links on the store's website and found them - they are by an Italian designer AV Mazzega and are called "Riflessi" and once I got that I found them for less at a store called brandlighting.com

    Thanks everyone!

sorry raehelen I didn't see your post!

Definitely going with 2 lights hung about 27 inches from ceiling. Each fixture holds on 100 watt bulb.

    Thanks!

Tracy - thanks for the inspiration - our new kitchen will have a very similar style and I was just starting to think about what type of pendant to hang over our island - cool!!!

Those are very, very cool lights (and I'm not really a fan of modern). Good for you for doing such excellent detective work.

I think the two 8" lights will be just fine.
