White Tile Countertop

Yes, I am experiencing the dreaded countertop confusion! First, we thought we were going granite (but couldn't find anything white enough); second we though we were going marble (but couldn't get my child's washable crayola marker off the sample piece!!!) now we are thinking something totally different.....

white tile! NOT the traditional glossy 4x4 or 6x6 white tile but something more modern like a rectified porcelain in either a gloss or matte/honed finish with butted white grout joints. Our cabinets are dark brown (almost black) and we have looked at almost every surface option and I just am not in LOVE with anything. At least this would be "cheap" and I wouldn't feel terrible about ripping it out down the road when my kids are gone and I can finally install my dream marble!

Do any of you have any experience with this look? All the photos I can find are of the old style white ceramic with 1/2 inch grout lines....blah! Or, am I just crazy to think about doing this? I am running out of ideas :(

We are having the EXACT same issue...dark cabs with white counters but really struggling to find white counter we like. We are definitely thinking about white tile. I have actually found white porcelain tiles in 20X20 and 24X24. Thinking that could look really cool with minimum grout lines. And perhaps different tile for counter edge band...

Plus I think that fact that it is not done as commonly anymore is kind of appealing. If it works for you and nothing else does, I say go for it. It's your kitchen!!

Half inch grout lines? UCK!!! I love tile, but of course you're not getting that!! Bill, the tile setter, has shown pictures of some large format tiles on counters. I, personally, don't care for them. They look like floor tiles to me, though I see the advantage. Remember, when you have rectified tiles and very narrow grout lines, you'll need to use a brush or something between the tiles to clean. I don't like cheap tiles on counters either.

I totally get not breaking the bank on counters that you don't love, but if your kids are in the markers stage you're going to be living with whatever you choose for a long time! You should choose something you at least like, if not love.

Have you checked out the white Caesarstone? It's very white, though I don't know how it holds up to markers.

Also, have you looked at some not-quite so cheap tiles? There are gorgeous tiles that you might be able to love at least a little for the interim.

The new rectified porcelain tiles we saw only use 1/16" - 1/8" grout lines...barely visible. So many beautiful white ones with striations, waves, natural markings, interesting textures, etc. Look around at all the tiles and be amazed!

Would you consider corian? Everyone knows how dirty the grout lines get, no matter how careful you are. Granted, I don't have corian in my kitchen, but I do in two of my bathrooms. One (the white) is used for my daughters who use make up and sprays when they are home. It all cleans up really well. There are many different choices.

    Mom2cohen,

Are you sure you really want tile? It sounds like a moment
of frustration and a settle. You are stuck in this moment
    and turning to tile.

I know you want the white white look of your counters.
You are on the right track, it will be beautiful.

But Tile is not going to be white with the cross lines
of the grout even if you have the blinding look of white
it will get dirty, change colors ever so slightly and
could drive you a little crazy. While it might seem like
you are saving money in the long run it will be
challenging to care for. Is it worth it?
I have had tile (the small horrific 4 by 4) and the upkeep
of white grout and white tile with children who eat peanut
butter, spaghitti, cookies, ... is hell. Truly hell. The
white tile is perfect if you are never going to use your
kitchen. Oh dear, I sound harsh. I think you are stuck
and turning to tile as an option but this is not your
    dream.

Get your dream you won't regret it. Keep searching you
    will find the right counter.
When I think of large tiles, I think of this image.

This is Concentto white Quartz. Beautiful!!

An Image of large tiles. Not white but you can see that
a solid surface might be more what you are looking for.

This is Kashmir White granite. It is not pure white
but with the dark cabs it looks stunning.

This is not white but it is corian by dupont. Lovely

Designer White by Corian Dupont. Check out the website
and see if you can find something you love. I truly
believe it will look far better than tile.
    (jmho just my humble opinion)

    Good luck,
    ~boxer
