Cabinets - Drawers

Please suggest areas to use cabinets, drawers or pullouts on this kitchen layout. Appliance placement is firm and cannot be moved.

I would suggest drawers over doors pretty much anywhere (except of course those little triangular cabinets and the sink base). If you have anything particularly tall to store (like a stand mixer, or tall stock pot, or if you want garbage/recycling/pet food bins) then measure it and see if they will fit in the lowest drawer. If not, consider allowing for pull-outs to acommodate those items.

    I agree.

    And trash, if desired.

Possibly #14 if it's going to be a bar cabinet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have said that #20 is a pullout trash/recycling.

That makes sense about #20. I meant to ask about that and forgot. My kitchen has 20.5' of base cabinets. Everything is a three- or four-drawer stack except the sink base (36") and two 15" pull-outs. That leaves a full 14+ feet of drawers. We deleted upper cabinets in the reno, and I still have empty drawers, even after relocating everything. Drawers are the bomb.

We did IKEA cabs, so rather than have a door to open and pull-outs inside, the pull-out is actually a full-height door attached to a bottom pull-out drawer. Then there are one or two pull-outs inside. I keep the cat food and litter in one, and the KA stand mixer in the other.

Jakabedy - Thanks for the measurements. I wanted a smaller kitchen with less cabinet space than our previous home but now I am getting nervous. It's hard to compare because we are temporarily staying in another house and the old house is gone. I've been searching all the postings on GW and today I started noticing that some people (like you) are not having any upper cabinets. What a neat idea, but our kitchen area is much too small to do that. This will be our retirement home and we both have agreed to cut down on saving stuff we do not use.

So this layout is final? OK... Is there at least a prep sink on the cooktop run? I hope so...

Well, the best I can recommend then is as many drawers as you can fit!

If there is no prep sink near the cook top, I'd add one. You won't regret it!

Also....I'd eliminate all lower cabinets and go with drawer only, except for sink bases and trash pull outs. I went with all drawers in my kitchen and not only does it look great, it is highly functional.

You said not to, but I'm going to say it anyway. If there was any chance for it, I'd move the cooktop cabinet down the run 14" towards 2, consolidating 3 and 7 into a single cabinet with a single upper of 10 and 12. It would move the cooktop a little closer to the sink. It gets rid of two small cabinets and replaces with single larger cabinets. Every base cabinet on the run to be drawers.

Between the oven and the ref - full height, full depth pullout.

19 looks funny to me and I think I'd plop for a non-45 degree front edge for the base - so it met the wall at the edge of cabinet 17. If custom, I'd do slightly shallow drawers or build in the micro there.

The only other thing for me is to cut 4 and 7. A little decorative feature like pulling out the cooktop wouldn't be worth losing the cabinet space in the next cabinets. If those guys are 3 inch pullouts, they're still a trade off. Those cost around 200-400 bucks each and a spice insert for a drawer is around $15. Just that change would allow me to be a bit more spendy someplace else.
