Almost done kitchen flood update.

Thanks to everyone for your advise to my original post. You all really helped a lot.

Quick recap: DW installed 9.10. Hose ruptured on 9.20 @ 2:30 am and flooded new kitchen.

I'll try to make this short.

I did call my insurance agent, not company and was told not to file a claim. The problem was due to installing a hose by the appliance store. So it should be their responsibility. I have learned that homeowner's claims = jacked up rates or being dropped.

Called the appliance company. A local reputable company that has been in business for years, not a big box store.

After much back and forth with managers and the grand-poo-bah service manager, it sounded like they were going to take care of me. I was not being unreasonable. #1 I asked for the dishwasher to be replaced since I just bought a new, high-end for me one, not a water damaged appliance from Craig's List. #2 The water abatement service reimbursed. (Thank you Gw's for that advice). And #3 a guarantee in the writing that if the floor is compromised, they will replace it.

All was good until they picked up the hose (after numerous pictures) and called back and said there was nothing they could do because they do not install dishwashers with this (insert used)hose. Service manager talked to installer who denied he installed the faulty hose. After a 45 minute "debate" I asked the owner of the company contact me.

After listening, the owner said he would investigate and get back to me with his findings. And whoot whoot, when he called back, he was royally PO'd. Don't know what investigation methods he used, but the installer admitted he took the hose from his van and installed it. Not a company approved hose. There was a summit meeting at the company today and I was assured that "THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!" by the owner. Would've hated to be an employee at that meeting!

End result:

New DW being installed this week.

Water abatement paid for.

Keeping him updated on the floor, and he will replace.

How refreshing to know the man stands behind his company and he values integrity and his customers! Hard to come by these days. Hope this helps someone in the future. Thanks again for helping me thought this, GW'ers are the best!

So glad the owner of the company is doing right by their customer. I bet that installer had a REALLY bad day! Serves him right for what you have had to deal with!

Congratulations! I'm happy to see an owner standing behing his company. Happy to hear you stood up for yourself and your beautiful kitchen!

    pure awesomeness!!!

Thanks so much for your kind words.

I can't take that bet bahacca. I bet he had a really bad day too!

gardenamy, my kids said "Look out, Mom's got her Irish up and it's not pretty!" I was so flipping angry when the service manager said he talked with the installer and he didn't install the hose because it wasn't on the work order, I lost it. I had to stick up for myself and my new kitchen and tell him that he had an installer using rogue parts. More scary talking with the owner. I was shaking, but I did it.

Been keeping an eye on your remodel, remodel. Looking really fine!

Good for you! So glad it all turned out okay. Getting your Irish up is fine, but Irish diplomacy is a true art (that I hope to someday master). Slan!

So nice that they listened to reason. If you had paid to have it installed, then why would anyone but the installer have switched the hose? Common sense....
I bet it feels good to be vindicated, but the sad part is you were put through the ringer and you are only getting back to even. They should do something for your trouble, such as a gift certificate for dinner or such. You were definitely put out by this, but no one ever seems to factor that in....

I was saddened to read the thread the other day detailing your disaster. I wouldn't wish that mess on anyone (well, maybe my b!tchy next door neighbor who screams names at me in front of my kids when she sees me on the street or in my driveway), but especially someone who just finished their kitchen.

Way to go sticking up for yourself! I've had to do it also, but with someone not as reasonable or professional as your company owner. It's uncomfortable and shake-inducing. I'm so glad you had a good outcome. Here's hoping your floor has a good recovery so you don't have to deal with that mess.

So glad you stuck up for yourself and glad the cause of the problem was the installer who they hired since you PAID THE store to install the dishwasher. Glad the owner stands behind his product and they are doing their best to make you whole. Please keep us updated.

I am glad the owner of the company is doing right by you. But, like a car accident that's not your fault, you are the one who has to deal with the hassle of the leak and the inconvenience of getting a new DW and, potentially worse, your floor being fixed. It's especially unnerving when you have to "fight" for what's right.

Anyway, sorry you went through this, and I hope things are soon back to normal in your house! :-)

Glad it appears to be working out for you. Hope the floor doesn't need replacing -- even if they pay for it, that would be a big pain to deal with.

Glad to see that you had a good outcome and the employee admitted what he did. Sorry that you had to go through all of this because someone didn't do his job as he should have.

I guess this will be a test of cork flooring for all of us!

Thanks Dilly. I've been practicing "Irish Diplomacy" for 50 years now. I agree, it's an art and a craft. My Dad taught it to me well and only pull it out when I actually want them to go there. Other than that it's just a wee bit of blarney :)

I agree dianalo, no one ever factors that stuff in. Loss of sleep, loss of a day's work, etc. But I never asked for any of that, just the stuff for my new kitchen. But most Mom's are like that. I don't think they listened to reason, I think they were a scared of my "Irish Diplomacy" And yeah, it feels good to take on the big guys and win! I was thinking of you in the middle of the night when I was trying to clean up the mess. My troubles are a wee bit of a drop in the pond compared to your ocean of troubles and battles. Wind at your back...

Sorry about your next door neighbor Breezy. Maybe a thread to brainstorm how to shut him/her up? It is affecting your kitchen,, right ;)

Thanks Lynn, jmcgowan, and lascatx . Overall I am happy with the owner, not his employees though. At least he is aware of what they are doing now. It has been a big PITA when the kitchen was sooo closed to being done, but it could have been worse. What if I wasn't home when it happened? What if I had particle/laminate cabs instead of solid? What if the cork was a floating? These are the things that keeps me awake. Silly I know.

I'll keep everyone posted on the cork floor prill. So far so good. The floor guy didn't think the water got bewween the subfloor and the cork b/c it's glue down. Plus it has 4 coats of urethane on top.

If I have been remiss in saying what a s support this forum has been during the kitchen reno, I'm saying it now. Thanks to you all!

    regarding the floor
i would contact Durodesign and tell them the story and ask them what t hey think about the whole mess and what it could have done to the floor. Also if there is anything they suggest you should do to make sure the integrity of the floor remains.
They have probably had something similar happen to their floors in the past.
I would stress that you are just asking for advice and opinions - obviously it is not their issue but you want your floor to remain as wonderful as it was after you laid it
    Just a thought

Hi, CeltinNE, I love your kitchen and had been following it all the way through. So pleased to see you are getting everything pulled back together. Glad the owner honored his obligations, although a face-off shouldn't have been necessary. He should have done more investigating with his installer from the outset.

So relieved to hear the owner is stepping up and taking care of this mess. That installer reaped what he sowed and hopefully he learned an important lesson.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this, but hopefully you're feeling better and are able to get some sleep now. And give youself a big high five for standing up to everyone and getting the situation resolved to your satisfaction. Thanks so much for sharing this painful experience so we can all learn from it!

Thanks so much muspic, thaat was a brilliant suggestion! I was going through the installer. I did contact Durodesign and they said the cork should be fine but check the subfloor, which was new.

Colorfast, the owner has been great. I LOVE hockey and you;'re right, a face off through the ranks should not have been needed.

Thanks flowers. That's what so great about this forum. We learn from other's problems.

The new dishwasher was installed today. It was tested and worked fine. Three times a charm as the guy who came to replace the hose crimped it and the dw has only worked twice! Pre flood. Hopefully this is the end if this saga and all is well.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Guess I missed this thread earlier, but kudos to you celtinNE for standing up for yourself and your kitchen! I'm non-confrontational to the extreme and always get my DH to do that stuff. I woulda had the shakes and then for sure tears after! Too bad I don't have any Irish ;)

And kudos to the appliance shop owner for at least stepping up. Though I agree with dianalo you might have been compensated with some small token for all the stress and anxiety and tears and inconvenience. At very least you'll have your kitchen back to baseline which is a relief!

Glad to hear the new DW is working well! Hooray for happy endings!
