Corian, marks - refinish?often?

I love my Corian counter, it is black/white/grey. The only thing i am somewhat disappointed in, is that when you look at it in the right light on an angle you see marks (some water and some just kinda fuzzy, dullish) kinda hard to describe, scratches (not deep). I do realize that to avoid water marks you need to wipe up right away. But sometimes someone leaves a glass and you don't wipe it right away.

Those water marks are difficult to remove. I got the Corian cleaner and tried that with a sponge but it, in itself made the surface look different in that spot. I certainly did not plan on having to resurface/clean the whole counter all the time. Do you get your counter resurfaced often? Nothing seems to be perfect, maybe i expected too much. But i thought it would be a bit more durable.

What finish do you have on your Corian - was it glossy or something like that? I don't have any kind of marks on mine like you describe - in fact it's wonderfully low maintenance and looks like new. I've had it for two years - no refinishing other than I've gone over it a couple times with a scotchbrite pad because it was getting shiny - and I prefer the matte finish.

I have corian flint, in satin, its a very dark blue-gray. We also have hard water, so water marks are a problem occassionally. I use a blue scotch brite with soap and water or Meyers Clean Day countertop cleaner. We have had the counter for a year and half and have not yet resurfaced it. I almost did after it was first installed because those first scratches bothered me, but after a bit of use they became less noticeable.

Mine is Mont Blanc and i would say it's not super glossy, kind of matte.
Gibby...even if you look at it on an angle so the light reflects, there are no smudgy or light scrapes on it? No water marks on yours at all?
    Hmmm????
    Thanks

Not Gibby, but when looking at an angle I can see light scratches, but no smudges or water marks. However, I have an almost solid color that is really dark, so scratches tend to show easier.

I wonder if you are seeing where a stain finish is starting to get shinier or duller? How long have they been installed? I noticed that happening in the first few months.

When my counter was new I noticed the first few scratches. However after two years it all just blends together kind of like a patina. I don't baby the counter in any way so it probably has millions of scratches by now. Plus I don't look for every little thing any more - you know how you do that when something's new? I have whole house water softener so hard water marks aren't an issue for me. Do you have hard water?

Hmm. Don't know, but I think gibby is onto something about not looking for everything. The darker the color and the shinier the finish the more everything will show. If that's your situation, there's no cure. I'd leave it alone awhile and see if with time it doesn't kind of reach its own level.

When I was selecting my Corian I knew I wanted NO maintenance, so I chose a matte finish in a lighter color--that was the advice I was given. I also ordered the cutting board size samples of my final possibilities and kept them on my current countertop a few months, in use, to see how they wore. That's no help for you now, but hopefully it will help anyone reading this.

Solid colors in counters are like the same in carpet - any pro decorator will tell you if you want to hide dirt, scratches or stains, get a patterned medium color.

We got Swanstone, identical to Corian except with a slightly higher heat resistance but the same matte finish, in a beige granite-speckle. It hides everything - in fact, I can't count on my husband to properly clean the countertops because it hides everything so well.

If I look sideways very closely at my 17 yr old Swanstone bathroom vanity, I can see very fine scratches on the surface. But just standing there looking at it, you can't see anything wrong. In fact, in 2003 I was congratulated by three different contractors on our "new" Corian sinktop, LOL!

Mine is pink with black speckles and nothing shows. Scratches show slightly in the solid pink sink, though. It's too light to show water deposits--and everyone has different water so it's hard to advise about water deposits without living somewhere first. I clean with 409, dish soap, Comet, whatever. A plastic scrubby Scotchbrite might even out the finish a bit, but try it out on the cutting board (if you got one) before tackling everything. I use it on stuck on spots on my Corian and the sink with no bad effects.

My Corian is around 25 years old and if it weren't so hideously '80s, you'd think it was new. I treat it like &$@* and it refuses to be defeated.

    Softcrub works great for watermarks
