Do you like knobs?

I am thinking of putting pulls on the drawers and knobs on the doors. The knobs I an considering are not round, and I wonder if anyone has any experience with living with non-round knobs. Do they catch your fingers? And, are you happy with knobs or do you wish you had pull?

Personally, the only place I'm going to use knobs are the few panels that won't fit the pulls I want. Even at that, I'm searching for a pull design that comes in multiple sizes so I won't have to do that. I like to be able to hook a finger in the pull for opening.

That is pretty cool hardware and is in basic concept similar to the knobs I'd get - they're oblong so it's easier to do the finger hook on them.

I did exactly what you're planning...pulls on drawers and knobs on doors. Also like you, my knobs are not round.

I'm very happy with the results...but I have mostly drawers in my base cabinets. I do, of course, have doors for my sink bases that have knobs. My 6" pullouts also have knobs.

    No problems "catching" fingers!

I am a knob person for doors. Just seems more functional to me. You can just drape your hand over the top of the knob and pull. With a pull, you have to turn your hand sideways (unless you mount the pulls horizontally, of course; in that case it's a toss-up) It's an insignificant difference though.

From an aesthetic perspective, I like to have a mix of knobs and pulls instead of same-same-same. I am having a hard time finding knobs I like that will go with my pulls, so I may end up with pulls on doors anyway.

I agree with what pbrisjar said - those knobs seem like the best of both worlds.

I don't like knobs and don't have them in the kitchen. I went with handles on the cabinet doors and cup pulls on the drawers.

In my old kitchen, the area around the knobs were scratched and discolored and looked pretty awful. There just doesn't seem to be a good way to grab a knob. I bought some knobs, handles and pulls and put them on the old cabinets and the kids and I tried them all for a week or so, and we all agreed, NO KNOBS.

I like those. The only problem I have with knobs is that there are usually some at pocket height (yes I'm short) and I get stuck sometimes. So make sure they are smooth enough to easily slip off of when you're hooked! (Even though I get hooked on knobs, I like them enough to put them in my kitchen.)

momj47, one of the things I was thinking about was the marking of the doors around the pulls or knobs. I thought about backplates, which are designed for that, but could not find any pulls with backplates that fit the rest of the kitchen. These knobs have a little bit of flare at the base, which I am thinking might help a little. And I am hoping to hear from others on the subject. That was smart to try them on the old cabinets!
I love your knobs and pulls, buehl! I looked a long time at them, but decided they just don't work with my stuff.

Our knobs (Dec Har) are made by a different manufacturer than our pulls (Siro)....

We bought a couple of Siro knobs & pulls and put them on the cabinets in our old kitchen to test them out. While we agreed we liked the knobs in general, we discovered that we didn't like the Siro knobs, they were too shallow (space that your fingers fit in). So we went knob shopping and found the Dec Har knobs...they're slightly deeper, just enough. We were lucky as they were both an antique iron and their finishes were virtually identical! We didn't like the Dec Har pulls as they were too "bulgy"...the center part bulged out a lot more than the Siro...sort of like a big sphere stuck in the middle of a bar. The Siro have more of a blending of the center w/the bar.

Anyway, I described our experience to show you that not only will trying them out ahead of time help you w/your decision on knobs vs pulls on doors, but it will also help you determine that the ones you picked are actually a good "fit" for you and your family's hands.

That's interesting! Where did you find Dec Har hardware? I thought I had searched most sites, but I do not think I have seen that name.
It is reassuring to see that there are other compulsives out there! I try to tell myself that in a few weeks I won't know the difference, but I can't quite get myself to believe it.

I have cutesy themed odd-shaped knobs on my island, and boring knobs and cup pulls on my perimeter cabinets. I'm definitely bumping into the knobs on my baking center (shown in pic) and occasionally catching clothes on the "tea" spout. However, they are so cute that I will forgive them.

Oh man, I wish I could convince Hubby to go with some of those. They'd look great in my kitchen. I showed him once, though and you should have seen his face. It wasn't pretty 0 adorable but not pretty.

I really like those knobs. I like knobs on doors and pulls on drawers as well. However, I think I will only do round knobs in my new (under construction) kitchen. We had oval football-shaped knobs in my last kitchen and it seemed like no matter how much we tightened them they would always spin a little. This bothered me bc I was always straightening them out.

There are so many choices out there it's impossible to generalize whether I like knobs or not. There are knobs I like and knobs I don't like. There are knobs that catch pockets or belt loops and there are knobs that don't. There are knobs that are hard to grab and there are knobs that aren't. There are knobs that have a low profile so that hand oils will rub on the cabinet and there are knobs of higher profile (same with handles.) There are knobs that are hard to grasp and there are knobs that aren't.

We sent with knobs on doors and cup pulls on drawers. They work well and don't have any of the negatives I've read above.

No, I don't. I call mine "pocket-rippers"! Next kitchen will have pulls with smoothly curved ends that don't catch on clothes!

We are going with knobs this time (3rd reno). First home we used oval knobs and never had a problem with them rotating because they had 2 small pointy things where they met the cabinet (kinda neat). My KD suggested knobs on this remodel so that if we ever wanted to change hardware, we would never have to worry about the size of the existing holes. I agreed since when we bought this home, we did a superficial makeover and we were stuck with the pre-drilled holes at a specific distance. This made it difficult to choose hardward (ended up with handles on doors and cup pulls on drawers-loved the pulls).

We went with non-round knobs as well. We like the symmetry of the rectangle knobs with the cabinet doors.

    Here is a picture:

They are Belwith Hickory Arts & Crafts Windover Antique knobs & pulls (rustic styling). The pulls are 5 1/8" and the knobs are 2 5/8". We like the fact that they only project out 7/8" so we have had no problems with catching clothing. They come in pewter as well.

Regarding knobs and pulls: While shopping & planning for new cabinets, I noticed something that I found very interesting. All the kitchens that I saw at HD and Lowe's had pulls on drawers and knobs on doors. IKEA's kitchens were exactly opposite, with knobs on drawers and pulls on doors.

I prefer pulls especially on larger doors, just because I think they add alot more decorative zing than dinky knobs. However, Buehl makes a good point, no matter what you choose, you should make sure that it will provide ergonomic ease-of-use.

nordhavn - expo has dec-har. i was going to get their ss bow pulls, but then found lee valley via this forum and they had virtually the same thing for a little less .. and no driving. ;)

I have rabbit heads, pigs, moose antlers, and some round knobs on the uppers....with the occasional deer, turtle, seal and squirril mixed in. We love them. I don't think that the shape is as important as the offset from the door. If there's enough of an offset that you can get your finger tips around the door...they're easy to open, no matter what the shape.

jtsgranite4us, those pulls and knobs look wonderful. Where did you get them? I like the fact that they are not teeny. Are the knobs hard to grasp, with the large post and relatively small flanges? Do the pulls project 7/8" as well?
I have been looking a a lot of photos to try to decide if I like pulls and/or knobs. It seems to me that the most frequent use is knobs on doors and some sort of pull on drawers, with cup pulls being very popular.
I think the "fun" knobs are fun~ and they would give my DH a heart attack.
Off to the Lee Valley site to see what I see there.

nordhavn - We purchased these knobs and pulls from Lowes. The price was very reasonable. You can view them online at their website. The color on their website show much lighter (antique bronze) then they really are in the store.

Neither of us find the knobs hard to grasp, although we both have small/medium hands. Both the pulls and the knobs project 7/8".

You should go test view them and try them at the store to see how they work for you.

We found the decision on knobs/pulls to be one of the more frustrating parts of the remodel. We are very happy with our choice.

nordhavn - Here a couple of up close photos I took this morning. Lighting wasn't the best.

One more thing to add to this discussion. DH, tells me that pulls are necessary for "load distribution". In other words, if you have large or heavy drawers and/or doors you should use pulls. So, drawers that will hold pots and pans probably require a pull, maybe two, depending on the width and weight. He says since cabinet doors generally don't weigh much, a knob is sufficient. In case you haven't guessed, DH thinks like an engineer.

momj7, that was a terrificly detailed album you put together of your kitchen. Thank you for taking the time. I especially like the detailed pic of how the dishwasher is mounted. I was wondering about that.

Nordhavn, I am considering the same exact knobs/pulls as you posted. Did you go with them? any pics to share?

I've been going crazy looking at knobs. ITs nice to see pics the finished product. I am doing off-white cabinets so the hardware will really show up. Adds to the pressure to get it right!

DH asked for pics as well (but he could give a rip about your knobs...he wants to see pics of the nordhavn) :oP
