Black soot on pot after cooking on a propane burner

So I was cooking a delicious meal for myself and family on our outdoor propane burner and before I knew it, the outside of the pot was covered with black soot which quickly found its way onto everything within a 100 foot radius...well maybe not everything, but you get the point. I usually use this burner for blackening meats and have never had this problem before. Anybody have any advice on how to avoid this in the future?? Thanks.
