Quick Help - cup pull dilema!

My cabinets were installed last Monday. When I came downstairs I was shocked to see the wrong pulls installed. The ones I had picked would now not work with the holes drilled on the drawers. I said to the cabinet maker "I'm pretty easy going, bring my some cup pulls that will work with where the holes are drilled".

He comes this morning when I'm not home and my son let's him in, he installs the new cup pulls. I get home and look at them and they are high on the drawer front, because they're cup pulls and he had to use the existing holes. To me the pull should be centred on the drawer.

Anyone have pictures of where their cup pulls are installed?

I've already paid him in full (my mistake I guess) - should I insist it be fixed? I'm really upset right now.

Help!

Thanks :(

Oh and the other thing, on my big drawer, he only put one pull......I think it looks a little odd. One lesson I learned, ask a million questions (one thing I didn't do)

Thanks Margcooks :) I'm just tired of being "easy going"...and I sometimes feel like he thinks he gave me the kitchen for free or he's doing me a favour.

The big drawer is 28" wide.

If I can figure out how to post pictures, I will.

Well the cabinet guy just stopped by with drill in hand to drill new holes in my brand new cabinets so he could move the cup pulls down. I said "whoa, hold on a minute, I don't want you to just drill new holes" He kinda just looked at me. I also asked about the two cup pulls on the bigger drawer and he's like "nope, it'll look too busy"

I am so frustrated and so upset with him. I told him to give me a day to live with it (thanks Margcooks) and I'd see what dh said when he comes home.

Now I'm wondering if I should just switch from the cup pulls and go out and find some regular pulls that I like instead. It was his mistake in the first place, but I can't even deal with him (he has zero personality) at this point.

Some people have put them higher (some on accident!) and they don't look bad. Whether or not yours look bad I can't say of course. In my experience with 2 kitchen remodels, the guy drilling holes is always so very paranoid about location and spacing--I'm surprised your guy was so cavalier about it and didn't ask.

You should try to have it fixed if you can. And if the doors are stained (not painted), you will have to have new doors/drawer fronts, which is why it's normal to double check location before drilling.

If you can't have it redone, you might have to give up on cup pulls if they look really weird but regular pulls won't.

Cross posted there. Can you take some pictures, of the general room and the big drawer in particular? Maybe you can get some specific advice on how to deal with this.

Hopefully this will work (you're going to get a sneak peek of my extremely small kitchen)

This last picture is a picture of the wrong pulls he initially installed (but now I'm thinking they might actually work better).

Honestly, I like the last picture best - those pulls are much nicer IMHO.

Thanks weissman - I think I agree with you. In person, the last pulls are a little too "fancy" for my taste, I might see if I can find a simpler version. At this point, I think I might just go pull shopping on my own & purchase.

Should the pulls on the drawer be larger?

Thanks for the sneak peek! I think you should stop the cab guy from doing anything else at this point for a few days so you can think this out. Go shopping yourself and look at pulls. I, personally, wouldn't want cup pulls in my kitchen even though I admire the look of them in others and know that sometimes they are correct for the age of the home.

I like the look of those pulls in the last pic, but I can see how they could look fanicer IRL. Go shopping. Take a deep breath. It will work out. :)

I love cup pulls, so much that I'm getting them myself. But I REALLY like the last picture you posted so much more then the cup pull ones. The cup pulls seem "heavier" to me and I think the regular pulls look lighter and airier (is that a word? haha, I'm hopped up on cold medicine so I'm a little loopy right now).

    Good luck with your decision!

Thanks so much everyone - I appreciate your feedback. I guess I'll be going pull shopping :)

I like the last pic but I also think you could leave the cup pulls on the big drawers and put the bar pulls on the smaller ones. My vote would be for one pull only on the big drawers.

I also like the pulls better. I have cup pulls now and don't like them at all...ergonomically not good for me.

I also like the handles better than the cup pulls.

I think your larger drawer works well with just a single pull, any wider and it might not but it looks fine.

One thing about the off center cup pull. Since there is a consistency, it looks ok. Sometimes when I have pictures matted, I actually have a bit wider margin on the lower, especially with a larger picture. "Gravity" can visually make the lower part of the mat look narrower. In your case the pulls sit slightly higher in the "frame" of the shaker fronts so with the weightier cup pull, I think it's ok--particularly on the bigger drawers, right in the middle might start to look like its too low. Maybe its nonsense but that is how I visualize it

But I still like the conventional handles better than the cup pull :)

I too like the handle pulls. But it would help if the photo with the cups is taken at the same distance as the one with handle pulls to see the same perspective. I know you don't want to give the away the big kitchen reveal but it would help :).

When I first saw the cup pulls I can see that they were higher then center but they did not really look bad. maybe as Palimpest said, its because they are all that way. Its more noticeable on the smaller drawers then the larger ones. I think the one cup pull looks fine on the larger drawer.

I personally like the cup pulls on your cabinets, but think both handles work really well. It would be upsetting that he just went ahead and picked them without asking you. Just not right at all.

Hmm. The cup pulls look too big for the drawers, but it's hard to tell from here. I think all is not lost, but you do have to stop that guy with the drill from doing anything else. :)

The cup pulls aren't too badly located because (1) you'll be looking more down onto them and (2) there's room to get your hands inside them like this. BUT! you're definitely not the first person who has had this problem with cup pulls. I think a pull manufacturer could make a killing with cup pulls that had their screws somehow in the middle instead of the bottom so people could use centered holes.

Anyway, go shopping. Find something you like that looks good in the middle. Even if you're stuck with these, which you aren't, it's going to look good. These are not that bad!

For the record, cabinet guy deserves a kick in the uh shin for over ruling your request for two pulls in a drawer. It would NOT be too busy and he needs to learn to politely offer up a differing opinion. Either way is fine with those drawers. (Okay--if those pulls he initially installed are as frilly as you say, maybe two WOULD be too busy!)

You're just going to have to pick your own pulls and personalize the place. Try to have fun!

Thanks everyone - where else can you find a place where people understand you stressing over pulls :) You guys are truly the best :)

I vote for the conventional handles. I hope you can get the guy with the drill to back off and let you have some time to work this out to a conclusion that will make you happy.

I hope you'll let us know what you decide to do!

I like the last picture with the pulls also. The bin pulls seem a bit overwhelming for the smaller cabinets, but look fine on the larger cabinets. Good luck!

I, too, vote for the conventional pulls instead of the bins -- nice proportional look. I would suggest, though, that you consider putting two pulls on each of the larger drawers under the small drawers, and make sure they're lined up with the small drawer pulls above. You'd end up with 3 rows/2 columns of drawer pulls for a consistent, balanced look. If it's too painful to consider (filling, finishing holes in the wrong place -- would they ever look "right"?), don't worry about it, there's really nothing wrong with the way it looks now. Just an opinion and preference thing. :)

    Hi.

Just my two cents-you said you were leaning toward regular pulls, but less fancy. Try Restoration Hardware "Aubrey" pulls. I think they'd look great on your drawers. Your kitchen looks great!

I also like the regular drawer pulls. Just a note, the "rule of thumb", according to my KD, is any drawer I think more than one pull on a 20" drawer would look very crowded...28" is on the "border".

One or two is personal preference. Drawer glides today are built well enough today to use either configuration and to use just one hand/pull to open drawers regardless of configuration.

I used two pulls for all drawers >= 30"...

18" wide drawer over the trash pullout (just 2" less than 20"):

27" wide drawers (close to your drawer width):

I don't think Gardenweb wants me to give you my opinion - I've tried to post on this about 5 times over the last 2 days and it doesn't work!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Anyway, for what it's worth - I like the "regular" pulls over the cup pulls on everything except for your two larger drawers on the bottom. I really like the cup pulls on those. Maybe you could do a mix-n-match. I think it would look nice.

Another vote for the pulls over the cups and I think the single pull looks good on the bigger drawer. As someone mentioned I too think the cup looks too heavy on those smaller drawers. Good luck with your decision and your pita contractor!
