Size and Dimension of Backsplash Box above 36' Range??

Ok all you design experts, I would like to put in one of those boxes above the range as a focal point (as well as for storage) on our backsplash wall. We have a 36" range. Is there a standard size...or perhaps the better question is, how much space/gap between the cabinets on the sides, hood on the top and range below for the box? What is the typical depth of the box? Are the sides shallower than the shelf at the bottom? Any insights welcome and appreciated!!

I don't have a niche area, but decorative area with tile. I played with the dimensions with a piece of paper taped up to the spot for a whole day!! I have a 36" cooktop and it ended up being 30 3/4 by 20inches with the 'framing' of the moulding pieces. HTH

Do you mean a wall niche? I have one:

Keep in mind that anything you store there may get splatters from the items cooking on the cooktop.

Very helpful, thank you. You mentioned splattering...may I ask if you regret the niche? It seems beautiful and practical, but what do I know!!

No, I don't regret my niche at all, I think it adds a nice touch over my cooktop...especially since I don't have a backsplash yet. But things do get splattered occasionally. I just check the items in the niche every week or so. I just wanted to warn you, especially if you make things that have a tendency to splatter, like homemade sauce or bacon.

I'm not sure, though, if that's a good place for oils as they should not be exposed to heat and it can get warm under there if I'm doing a lot of cooking on the cooktop.

Well...I'm lusting over Jodi_in_so_calif's backsplash, but (1) I'm not sure if it will go with my kitchen and (2) some of the key tiles have been discontinued, so it may be difficult to do it.

Here's a link that has her backsplash. BTW...she also has a niche behind her cooktop.
