As long as you don't cool any cakes or pies on it in there, you should be fine.

Most of the baker's racks I see aren't in the kitchen so they really are flexible shelf units much of the time.

Mine is in the laundry room holding plants for the winter.

I love baker's racks and I'd just be pleased for you that you found a wonderful place to have one. I don't have anywhere to put one :-(

Toilet paper holder in the kitchen as a side towel holder: ewww!

you're always cool plllog. But now you got me thinking. What if one was to retrofit one of those floor standing toilet paper holder to hold paper towels. Just extend the arm and depth of the part you slip it onto. That would go from ewww to cool!

We call them baker's racks but they're most commonly used as plant racks. Nobody will think twice about its name. My baker's rack which I bought to use in a kitchen long ago was actually patio furniture intended to LOOK like a baker's rack...

my baker's rack is in my bathroom to hold towels, blow dryer, curling iron, etc (I have very limited storage in my bath). I did repaint it as it had been on the porch a number of years and was getting a bit rusty.

I think it's a great idea. Over the last couple months I've been looking for a baker's rack with the right dimensions to fit over/around a toilet so I could use it as a shelving unit in the hall bathroom (it's a small bath with only the sink cab for storage and that's so not enough).

I say go for it.

Thanks, everybody. I have used it to hold things like cookbooks, but it has always been in the kitchen or dining room and available for pies. I'm going to rename it "plant rack" and go for it!

And, KitchenKrazed, I promise! No breads nor pastries. Not even fancy soaps that are meant to look like food. Those give me the willies anyway! (Total eeewww.)

All this talk of paper towel holders reminds me that I can use it for that, too. My brother refuses to use the beautiful, folded paper towels I have for guests. He'll use my hand towel, but he never shakes his hands off first and just soaks it (more eewww). Good excuse for that beautiful Michael Aram paper towel holder? Put a (white, I promise) paper towel roll for him on the "plant" rack and pretend it's decorative! Usually, the roll lives under the sink, and he forgets it's there, and then I go to dry my hands and find a swamp rag hanging where my pretty towel should be (shudder).

Oh, the possibilities! And I have some lovely fingertip towels that someone gave me that are too big for the sink top, so I can put them on a shelf and a basket for used ones on the bottom shelf, and EVERYBODY can have dry hands. They'll still use tissues because that's how people are, but with a choice between the towels on the rack, the pretty folded paper, the roll paper, and the fingertips, surely there will be plenty to suffice!

Okay. Mark this as a good plan. Out go the milk crates that have been holding the plants since the stand got wrecked, but letting them die because they don't stack tall enough to get to the light. :) First step to getting my entryway redone, accomplished. :)

Kitchen-something in the bathroom...OK. Bathroom something in the kitchen...now that would probably be Ewww.

And rhome410's comment is why I have different cabinets and counters in my bathroom than in my kitchen. In many new homes and renos people often use the same cabinets and counters in both rooms - perhaps it's a cost saving or for aesthetic flow, I don't know - but to me it's Ewww.

Don't be so conventional, people. Plungers make great pasta drying racks. And those disposable toilet seat covers are better than bibs because they go all the way around your head.

Blfenton--I agree with you on the countertops, but never thought of the cabs in that way. I was planning on shaker for the master vanity also, like my kitchen. I sooooo love shaker. ;)

I also have the same cabinets in both kitchen and baths, but not the same counter. Mostly, because I think it's fun to change it up, not because I think the kitchen would ever feel like a bathroom. :)

Breezy - I have shaker style in both but creamy painted in the kitchen and natural maple in the bathrooms.

Ah ha, Blfenton! That makes sense. Now I can happily use shaker in both as kitchen is white and mbath will be a stained wood of some type. Feel so much better now.... ;)

Sorry 1929. I should explain further. The reason I called for specifically TKO opinions is that anyone who isn't totally kitchen obsessed would just see a shelf unit. I was worried that someone who saw it as a baker's rack, where pies and pastries are supposed to be cooled, would have an issue with seeing it in a bathroom. Something a TKO might think. Apparently not, however, though I think I'm going to buy some new plants for it before I move it so that it is more obviously a plant stand. :)
