Carpet in the upper hall will help minimize noise from people traveling up and down the hallway at night or early in the morning - potentially preserving the bedroom occupants good night sleep. I would recommend carpeting in the bedroom to help absorb sounds within the room, be that snoring or otherwise. It is perfectly ok to mix carpet in the bedroom with wood in the hall. If you lay wood in the hall, you can always add a carpet runner for both sound, comfort and appearance.

If you are replacing existing carpet, I would go with wood for the entire house, and you can put area rugs in the bedroom to soften the look as wood considered a more desirable floor choice and long durability.
