That's a really big firebox.

I would be tempted to remove the whole thing and start from scratch.

@jn3344, I agree, I would go a bit softer on color. But that's only my thought. ;)

We had one of those at my mom and dads house back in the 70s. It's ok but not really a contemporary look imho.

I like the stove idea that Cottage Craft Tile added above. If you were going to keep the whole wall, I think the wood stove idea would work about the best.

I'd whitewash the brick and put in a chunky, rustic mantle.

Clean it before you do anything else as it should bring it back to life. Check youtube for videos on how to do it.

And maybe darken your beams?

thanks for the input! The white piece with the crack is an old wooden beam that the previous owner pained white!!! They painted the beams too!! Would love to have less brick and a new rustic beam covering the old white one!

This is such a great fireplace and surround! I would recommend cleaning and restoring it before you do any renovations or painting. Best of luck!

It would look great restored! The only thing that is kind of odd is that the bricks are not all a uniform shape and the mortar looks kind of sloppy. If you could clean up the brick- add a nice mantle that spans entire width, add an insert with attractive doors, redo the pass through doors it could be very nice. It actually looks a lot like my fireplace- we have the pass through on the opposite side and ours is a bit taller. Good luck!

I would remove the paint off mantel and trim around door ,it takes away from the brick

If your budget could handle it I would say take it all down and start fresh with a more modern look. If your on a smaller budget, but can do a partial reno I would say pull down a foot or more off each side and give it clean walls on the sides to open up the space. If your on a very tight budget I would go with the white wash and fix the beams with filler and repaint. This would definitely brighten up the whole room.
