Leave the tops open with panels on the lower ones? Shutters may just feel too hard / stark...

Do you need out of the window treatment - privacy day or night or both, sunlight control, temperature control, decoration?

As you can see sun gets very bright there is a new build going in on the fireplace side of the house so yes night time privacy is an issue, but we love the view. The shutters I am looking at are 3.5 inches.

How about Roman shades? They have them without cord, so they are safe for kids

Love the space! And the view! I agree that shudders might be too harsh. Consider solar shades with 2 open weave drapes on either side of the windows for softness. Leave the top row of windows uncovered. Hang the 2 side drapes near the ceiling (to soften the hard edges). Hang the solar shades only on the lower windows and door. Your side windows can have just solar shades to make all the windows blend.

We have shutters on our front windows and love them. They are used mostly for letting in light while maintaining some privacy from the front street. They do not provide a great view.
We have 2" wood blinds on our back windows. We adjust them during the day - open to let in morning light, tilted to keep out afternoon west sun, closed at night. They give a better view than the shutters, but lots of lines! We would like to put up roman shades or roller blinds on three of the windows (they are protected by an arbor) for an I obstructed view.

Lovely space - Have you considered Hunter Douglas Silhouette blinds or as other makers call them Sheer Horizontal Shadings - they are very versatile. I don't think a lot of solar shades provide privacy at night but check to make sure.

Adding texture here will do a lot to finish your beautiful room. Natural bamboo or match stick roman shades would be awesome here. They can be made "bottom-up" so that the upper portion of each window is open to your view. If you do like shutters, a natural wood tone rather than paint will warm things up. Finishes vary and a light to medium stain would pick up on your wood floors. Best, Jeff

I love drapes for a couple of reasons. Firstly they absorb sound and make a room less echoy ( not sure if that is a word)and when you have a lot of hard surfaces in a room like wood floors , cabinetry and large windows sometimes that can be a problem, shutters would just magnify the problem. The second reason is that you can introduce pattern or colour with the use of drapes.

Let me just say we started this project last March from the time I started talking to the sales agent I did not make any changes -- window treatments I can't commit. At first it was bamboo blinds I thought that would bring out the bamboo floors, then my son suggested solar shades?? There will be columns at the corners of the dining room when the builder gets to them(another story). The walls are a soft grey.

I regretted choosing shutters. They blocked the view and were dust collectors. I would go with solar shades.

I understand you perfectly. We've been in our house for 8 years and still have no window treatments:) We do have UV film on the windows to protect the furniture and the skin. I am thinking of doing roman shades..I looked at Hunter Douglas modern Roman shades without the cord,,they are nice, but pricey (around $500 a piece). Your room looks really nice and some shades and maybe sheers would look nice

Yes, maumason, you are right hunter Douglas silhouettes are prefer! You must check into them. I've had them on my front windows for 16 years and they are super. I think having a mix of window treatments could be an answer too.

So after letting this swirl for a day I don't think I want to loose the view with shutters, if I go with solar shades what materiel what color?

Beautiful windows that don't need detracting from with contrast, so i'd choose an off-white solar shade as close as possible to window and door trim color, to maximize the luminosity.

Great comments. I agree with most. Absolutely don't do anything with the transoms above. Shutters would indeed look clumsy and too imprisoning. What ever you do, I suggest that less is more. In other words, gain the privacy and light reduction (if desired) that you want without the widow treatments speaking. I would nix drapes. JMO. Enjoy the home and the kiddies!

My first thought with that beautiful view and your comment about the sun was solar shades. They help to retain the view while protecting your beautiful floors and furniture. I've heard the darker the shade, the more view you retain.
