It works! And the pictures are beautiful. I think we've made it through another winter. I have seasonal depression so winters are long and hard. Looking for the spring flowers to bloom gets me through. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

A true breath of spring. peaceofmind, depression gets worse for me during the last of winter too. Thats why i have so many spring flowers, they are more welcome than any of my others tho i love them all.

Beautiful! My first daffodil opened yesterday too - first flower for the year except for my hellebores which haven't bloomed very well this year for some reason.
It's nice to see flowers when so few things look alive. I used to have crocus scattered around the yard but had less every year until the last one finally disappeared. I planted about 50 more a couple years ago and not a single one made it though to the next year to bloom. : (
Marian - I'm not sure I've ever seen Cornelian Cherry around here. Maybe I have and just assumed it was forsythia. It looks more upright than forsythia in your photo. I'll have to watch for it.

Christie, Cornelian Cherry is related to the flowering dogwood. It is Cornus mas. It isn't native here. You can't see them in the pic, but it has limbs that come out horizontally then turn up. I took this pic from our front window.
That is too bad about your crocus. The rabbits or deer usually eat the flowers off of mine, but so far this year they aren't. Ooops I spoke too soon...I just went out to check them and saw a half-eaten one in the front bed. The large ones are blooming now. The smaller ones are finished for the year.
I thought I had lost all my Iris reticulata, but have several in bloom now. I have to fence them or all the blooms would be eaten!
I have daffodils in bloom all around our yard...in all directions. The miniatures were the first to bloom. They are so cute!

Wow... you guys must definitely be more on the warmer side than I am....

Do you eat the cornelian cherries? I know they do in Eastern Europe. I've wanted to try them for years. They have them at One Green World and Raintree. If they are something kids would enjoy picking and eating, I think I'll go ahead and order one this year. Yours is pretty. They'd look gorgeous in a long row, wouldn't they?

No, Robin, I have never used the Cornelian Cherries, but know that they are edible. They are not good raw....I did taste one...:-) If I remember right, I got mine from Forestfarm. It sent up a couple of suckers and I moved them ( last year) to another location. I hope they do well.

The fruit on the American Cranberry bush ( Viburnum) is edible too, but I don't use mine. The birds don't even eat them!

Oh my! Ginge! I will never post another pic of my pitiful Dendrobium! Is your's in a greenhouse? And what is it planted in...what kind of mix? I bought a mix from WalMart for my Moth orchids, but they are not doing at all well. The new ones I bought last year are blooming...sparsely, and the leaves do not look well. The stuff I got was about half rocks! Is that normal orchid mix? How often do you repot yours?

Beautiful orchid! I didn't know they ever got that full of flowers. I always thinks of those tall, spindly ones with a single bloom or two that you see at Lowes. I don't know anything about orchids, but yours is spectacular.

I have had this one a long time started as one tiny bulb from an ex neighbor , this one is Dendrobium aggregatum a species ,not man made . They have changed the name of it don't remember to what . It is in the green house .
Most of the Phals. I have are in Spagnum moss some in a bark mix the mix you got should be fine . Usually if the leaves look limp on Phals. it is from root loss , staying too wet usually from old mix , not to dry . They should approach dry before watering . East very early sun is good . Grow almost like an African Violet, no water left in the crown after watering .

marian, I think walmart potting soil has been terrible the last couple of years. I've been getting mine at a local nursery. It comes in a big bag but i just save it till later.

Thanks Vickie. I will look for better orchid potting soil, if I can find a local place that sells it. Our local nursery shut down a oouple of years ago, and I don't know who else would have any. I never go very far from home.....
