How wide is the soffitt for the lights?

I want to decide whether to install the lights in the middle of the soffitt or slightly out. I have a soffitts that are 14" wide, and I can place it at either 7inch(middle) aesthetically right or at 9inch so it can light more of the room than the walls. The trip will have a 30 degree swivel.
