you already have the art for over the fireplace, or you're still picking? because usually a piece like that helps set the tone -- you can take colors from it to guide your choice of rug and pillows, etc.

also, is your TV going on that piece to the left of the fireplace, or not in this room, or...?

Hi, I will not be using this gold piece. The tv will go on top of this console but I don't think I like this media console.

I can see slate blue being very pretty in this room. I am wondering about the chair the furthest from the fireplace.....is it in a good position for visiting with the sectional people? It looks lonely, but it might just be the angle of the pic, too.

Abbyjean, are you talking about the 2 accent chairs? Here are some more pics with a close up to the fabric. The overall is taupe/gray.

Thanks for the additional pictures. When I first looked, that far chair looked like it was almost behind the conversation area, but I can see now that it is just fine......and I like how they are centered with the middle window.

OK, stay with the shag and go for a mixed color with the cream and taupe and brown. Maybe blue mixed in, too???

Abbyjean, thanks for your comments! Just a note that the blue on the accent wall on top of sectional will not be staying. It was supposed to be a grayish and turned out blue. I don't think it looks nice with the taupe.

Definitely choose your art work first and then pull colors from it for the room. Add a table between the two chairs possibly with a lamp on the table or a floor lamp to one side of the chair. A rug will help tie the furniture and floor space together. To really finish the room add some window treatments. I could see two long drapery panels flanking each of the outside windows or add a panel on the outside windows and in between the middle window. Hang them high to draw you eye up. Please pick an area rug 1st. It should be the foundation of the room. I still think the chairs need to be closer to the sectional for good conversation. I would rather see you go with more color rather than changing the blue on the accent wall to gray.

Slate could work, however try some area rugs. Most rug dealers will help you choose size & maybe color and if fact, will deliver 3 or 4 for you to try in your room. I would not go with slate for the rug. Maybe a kilim, oriental, Persian type or ikat. I like your plan to change the mantel. It would be good with a large piece of reclaimed wood with a live edge. What colors do you like besides taupe, gray or beige?

Those drapes are exactly what you should do! They will be a show stopper!! Once you get the art pull a color that you like and then start looking for fabric. I could see red or orange as your accent in this room of course as long as that is in the art piece. Can't wait to see the finished room!

You have a very lovely spacious room, however I think the chairs need to be pulled closer to the sofa.

And yes, the art is a good starting point......hoping you can find some with that blue in it, though.

i think a good color you could add would be maroon. it's gorgeous. another option is any shade of blue, because it really pops and adds fun to a space. i would suggest an aqua or royal blue color.

The long drapes could be a show stopper, but they will be very costly to cover both sets of windows. Maybe silowuettes (sp) for the high ones & for the lower windows as high as most drapes come ready made.

Art should be what moves you & only you can select it. I would try a very large abstract. But don't try to match your décor to the art.

The grey up in the accent wall is SW Storm Cloud featured at Pottery Barn, but turned out too bluish and not sure what color to replace it with.

Is your mantel going all the way across the front? You need to balance the mantel and the art and the opening on the fireplace, too. So much to consider, huh?

Yes, we will be adding a wood mantel as previously suggested.

Do you already have the tv and it is the right size for this one? Just asking, as many people do not get a match with their tv and the console.

Which one will fit best on the fireplace? I really like all of them. When you want to paint, buy several sample cans to paint on 3 x 3 poster boards to move around your room to see at different times of the day in different light. I would go with a storage ottoman. Maybe 4 of them so they can be moved around for additional seating

If the TV takes up no more than 2/3 of the size, it should work. I like it.

I would like a round side table for between the chairs. I love those chairs by the way. Buy a fair sized table lamp in aubergine with a round drum shade.

The area rug needs to fit under the front legs of the sectional & hopefully under part of the chairs. Try pulling your right chair over to leave about four feet from the sectional & bring the other one just so the end table will fit.

I love the size of the 1st painting and the colors in the 2nd & 3rd.

I think the console looks a little Early American. Wouldn't you want something a little more transitional, like the mirrored one in the photo above?

@Nancy Walton- yes I like this style with the mirrors which I might swap for the one I currently have( the brown one). It's a picture from the furniture store so I did not buy it.
