Can I assume you mean Port Alberni, BC, Canada? I have a great contact up there who has been purchasing our cork for several years. They are home builders and renovators with an eye towards "green" building standards. With the amount of orders they have made with us, I have to guess they are very popular!

Whether it's an architect or a designer or a design build firm is less important than getting someone who is creative. Plenty of architects out there I wouldn't trust to design a house for my dog as well as plenty of designers out there who think all "design" is, is being proficient in a CADD program. Same goes for design/build firms. Some are excellent but for others the word "design" is nothing more than a six letter marketing word painted on the side of their pick-up truck.

I've always been a big believer that the best designers are fast on their feet. In that regard look for somebody who will come out to your place, and over your dining room table, have a "real time" design session with you and any other decision maker to figure out what to do or develop several alternatives. I do these all the time. We measure the areas in question and with abundant bumwad, look at all possibilities. I call them "design charrettes" and some last several hours. And I'm not hyping myself here as these are highly interactive and dynamic so the only way I do them is face to face. And there are no spectators allowed in these as everybody's a participant.

Maybe what I'm recommending is easier said than done but hopefully it's a start. And the best of luck with your project. Exciting times!!
