There is something for everyone. Where do you live? This influences choice.
Porcelain tile is durable and has many beautiful options. It can be cool underfoot so a heated floor is nice in our cold climate. Check out your local independent stores for great buys and advice.

Personally I think slate would be your best choice. It is very stylish and rustin. It is durable and cleans up well. I would go with a multi-colored pattern. Pictures below...

The only problem with rustic slate is that tables and chairs rock on it. This will become a pain.
It is also delaminates , the tile companies love it as it looks good in showrooms and they buy it very cheaply. As a tile and Stone company , we can supply it but do not recommend it to our clients.

Slate is beautiful but also peels naturally and is not recommended with dogs and grit. It requires regular maintenance and refinishing. If you have a regular housekeeper great. Another option I am putting in my laundry room/back entrance and sewing studio are luxury vinyl tiles. You can get a great looks, tough surface, and they are resilient and warmer than tile. They have many looks but you get what you pay for with these: go to a flooring business for these not big box.
