I agree you should go with some sconces on each side of the mirror, generally pendant lighting aim its light down , you want it to aim out towards you so you can have more effective task lighting.

Looks like I'm going to have to go with the overhead (not my first choice). Unless I've measured incorrectly, I have about 3 spare inches for the entire length of the bathroom! I'm going to have to get creative with storage! Thanks for the tips!

PS. The mirror is 57 inches in width. What should the width of the light be at the minimum?

Reenieb2: Oh dear! Glad you measured before buying or else that would've been a hassle to fix and that's definitely not enough space for sconces. But we're glad to help with guidelines for vanity bar sizing too. Many people choose a bar that is 75% of the width of the mirror, then mount it centrally. That's about 42 inches in your case. I have also seen people who get longer bars, though, sometimes even 100% of the width of the mirror.

Have been browsing your sight. On Houzz, I see a a lot of pictures of pendant lighting in bathrooms but when I search anywhere on line, there are only a couple that are "damp" rated. Do most disregard the need for this rating above the sink?

They might, which isn't very safe! (I also recently saw a picture where a wall sconce was hanging above a bathtub...and a long cord descended down the wall to the tub! Seemed really unsafe.) I'm glad you're looking at the ratings, though, and to stay on the safe side I would recommend using damp or wet rated lighting in the bathroom.

I bought my shower pan from RSI Kitchen and Bath. I called Mark Hager out there and asked him some questions about lighting. He was sooo nice!, He said, " I'll just run over to your house and we can look at it". He assured me that considering the small space, I really didn't need additional task lighting and would be fine with the recessed lighting placed correctly.

If I would have known about the Robern uplift medicine cabinet, I would have designed the entire space around that!
