Fireplace Brick: to paint or not to paint.

Wanting to completely reface my fireplace but it is not within my budget for now. Meanwhile wanting to freshen up this room and I have been playing with the idea of painting the fireplace brick white. Thoughts? It was originally a dingy white brick like the exterior of our home and I sprayed and brushed on a concrete stain which turned out great considering it was plain. It warmed up the room and now I'm thinking it visually weighs down the room. Paint it or no? And would I paint the mantle and hearth a different color?

What the fireplace needs is a larger mantle, definitely a chunky piece of wood, not paint. Keep the brick as is.

Clean it good before you paint it. It will bring it backk to life. Plus, once you paint it, you have to keep repainting it to keep it looking fresh.

It does blend with the floor, but consider painting it a darker gray than the walls.

HI -- I don't think you need to paint the brick . Build a mantel surround on it , then that will leave just a bit of the brick showing . Have the top part cover about 4 rows of bricks and then some sides added that are about 6 inches wide . Then that can be painted white . Or go out and see if you can find a mantel surround . I think you will probably have to get one made . Search on Houzz or Google for some ideas . You could have a cast concrete surround or metal other than using wood .

I have a similar fireplace with different color bricks hated it. I did much research on painting the brick finally settling on a product from Farrow and Ball....what a difference it made in the room I then painted it white will try to get a picture to you.

I would choose either white (the same shade as your trim) or a dark charcoal. An antique wood mantel in a gray wash would look good with either fireplace color choice.

How about painting all of the brick (and the mantel) a flat black? Like this photo.. If you're daring...the purple of your toss pillows. :)
