A lavish planting of perennials or small shrubs in the area under the window and next to the door. Add a window box. If it is snowing where you are, add colorful wind socks on both sides of the door if you like that sort of thing.

Bigger symmetrical windows placed on the second floor, shutters, a longer window on the first floor and paint the door a nice bright color. Change out the door for a door with no window, and landscape the front and sides.

Charming house. Are you n New England ? Paint the front door black. I would add black shutters. The blank space on the left had side of the house needs some kind of decorative piece. Perhaps a Hexapix in black?

• Why not add a unique window box with architechtual interest or great colors that you can also use to accent the exterior of your home.

Just search on google until you find what you like: https://www.google.com/search?q=large+window+box+for+smaller+windows,+great+outdoor+accents&safe=active&biw=1433&bih=750&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=oNbOVJuJIMSeNtLCgdAP&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg#safe=active&tbm=isch&q=outdoor+window+box+with+architechtual+interest

• And for the portico, you need shorter, angeled brackets, like the ones shown here: http://sixtyfifthavenue.blogspot.com/2011/11/craftsman-style-cottage.html

Truly, your home could be a welcoming show-stopper!

I keep seeing this house painted yellow with black shutters and a dark red door.

I would create horizontal divisions and use different sidings. you could go victorian or modern

How about greening it up and leading the eye vertically?

I agree with the need for traditionally sized and shaped windows. I'd make sure when you add a garden to the front, you add different heights of plants - e.g. evergreens that will reach the top of the windows. Though I usually like anything natural wood, I would paint the overhang supports, or even better, replace them with traditional porch post, like in the pix sacapuntaslapioz posted - I rather think the front facade pic pillars would give your house some much needed interest. If painting the house is an option, I'd consider something else besides white, since every house in the pic is white. Good luck!

Lots of good ideas here. The undersized 2nd-story window is the least attractive feature. If you could match it to the window below, it would make a big difference.
