1st time homeowners need design advice!

Just bought our first home (1950's ranch) and after lots of cosmetic work are finally beginning to add furniture. This is our living/dining room. Just moved cable to side wall across from big window and got couch.

We are looking for what to do in open space by TV--a new TV stand is not out of the question. Also, what do we do on the big window? Couch came with yellow pillows so we've kind of gone with it.

Really we will take any advice or insight you will have! Thank you so much!

How about some built-in cabinets in the area where you have your current cabinets for tv.

Start by getting a rug to go under your table. I'd go with something with some color and pattern to add visual interest to the room.

The wall that juts out is perfect for a panoramic portrait oriented framed picture of something you love. I have a wall about that size that I did that with, and it solved the problem of what to do with that space.

For the big window behind the couch I would do a nice patterned drapery to match your pillows.....here are some ideas.......

Sectionals are sometimes challenging to accommodate because they take up space and are limiting. That being said I assume you are happy with it. So working with it, I would put a low bookshelf or possibly a narrow table on right entering your door. This separates the entry area from living room. This shelf could be very functional to hold baskets of hats, or gloves, things that you want to feature or books.

Love your space, what a great empty palette to work with! Have you looked at grass cloth roman shades for the windows? For the space next to the tv, I would consider placing a large plant which would be taller than the tv. both would give your room a very model home feel.

You need some art. I would not ad anything. room looks beautiful as is.

Do you have empty space on the right side of the tv too? But, maybe a live plant? Or a floor lamp? Or if you could use extra seating occasionally, maybe an x bench there? Congrats on your new home! It looks a lot newer than the 1950s. Nice!

If you get a pretty chandelier for the dining table it will transform the look in there. Also, I'd scoot the sectional off the walls a few inches.

Lovely room, great selections so far although I agree with Bobbi about sectionals. Some things to try: turn dining table around and place étagère centered on wall. Again Bobbi's suggestion of a table or bookcase to the right of the door for function would be great. Pull the rug about 12" forward it looks jammed under the sectional. Roman shades would be great for your windows

1) nice chandelier above dining set
2) shear curtains covering along the entire length of room with drapes covering walls between the windows
3) wall mural on the wall behind dining table
