Does Anyone know ...............

Does anyone know what bird would have made this nest, it is on a branch of one of our very tall gum trees about 30 ft up so different from the noisy miner nests that I find this one is perfection seems to be made out of mud, Any Ideas, as it has probably been abandon as the noisy miners would not let any other bird in their territory. I took this pic with my Telephoto Lens then cropped a small square out of the centre so not very good quality.

Mud Nest:

More things in the garden Spikey runs around everywhere now it is not frightened of us, he spends a lot of time in the chook yard as we have a big stack of firewood there and he eats grass and flower petals and I have even seen it in the veggie garden eating the last of some peas I planted a while back as a cover crop.Very Contented

What a mouth Spikey has got:

It even let me swing it on this branch a nice little thing. Does anyone know if they bite as I was going to

put some thick leather gardening gloves on and pick it up, though I dont want to frighten it off either..

Down my way apostle birds and magpie larks make those nests only we have red soil so they look like terracotta pots up in the tree

Hi Bev I don't know apostle birds I will have to look them up, but there had been the one magpie lark around a while back, though it funny because the noisy miners kick up such a ruckus no other birds are game enough to hang around that tree, except for the Butcher Bird that is.

So I will tell hubby its a magpie lark's nest and Thanks for that.....Mystery solved......Cheers...MM.

    g'day mm,

depends on actual size of nest (not obvious in the pic) it could also be a willy wag tail? do you have them around? they usually aren't as secretive about where they put their nests as what the pee-wee aka magpie-lark can be. the bird that built it will be in your garden frequently well almost all of the time.

Willy-wagtail's nests are only about 5cm across, usually made with spiderwebs and often not very high. My guess is a peewees nest but not sure. My book tells me they are made with mud and about 5m -15m high.

Bearded dragons have small teeth and could bite. Smaller ones shouldn't harm you but several years ago I read in the paper about a young boy who lost part of a finger when bitten by a big one. I have my doubts about a bearded dragon actually biting off part of a finger, maybe it was a case of mistaken identity, but I believe a big one could draw blood. My father used to regulary hand feed the lizards at his place without a problem.

Hi MM I am pretty sure your nest is a pee wee nest as we had lots of them nesting on our land in our last place, when you say your lizard visits the chook yard he may well be taking your eggs, lovely pics as always, the dahlia is a lovely colour
