It takes up so much water because it is in a warm window and it is growing roots, leaves, and flowers. You could water it less and see what happens, but I think you know that answer!!

Does the pot have good drainage (big holes in the bottom)?
Make sure and read the FAQ at the top of the list to get an intro to taking good care of the bulb!

Ok, i will read that.
And no, the kit the bulb came in has a 6 inch pot with NO drainage holes.
I guess they dont deem them necassary.

On impulse, I picked up a couple of the Walmart amaryllis kits - since I hadn't had them for a dozen or so years. True, the kit pots don't have drainage holes poked through, but there were circles as to where to punch them out... with some difficulty, I might add. I used a hammer and Philips screwdriver. I was a bit afraid not to punch the holes, lest the bulbs sit in soggy coir.

Mine are in an East window and shot up very fast. Flowers will open in a few days.

The pots really do need drainage. Bulbs hate wet feet and are very prone to rot. Of course the seller would love for your bulbs to rot...you'd have to throw the dead bulb out and buy more! After it happens once, you make sure your bulbs have good drainage. I have between 400 and 500 bulbs in pots...
