We actually like to do both. We put in a set of recessed lights for use during food prep and then we also augment with pendants. They are switched separately and each would be dimmable in case you wished to do so.

When we do this, we try to put the switch for the recessed lights in the island. Sometimes we take a top drawer area and instead of making it a drawer, we install the switch there along with the electrical outlet that is required for an island. The front is generally hinged and you just flip it open.

Thank you for your thoughts, Deborah. When you refer to 'recessed lights', do you mean pot lights? What is the theory behind putting the switch for the recessed lights in the island? What about the switch for the pendants over the island?

Yes, I believe they are referred to as pot lights (or top hats) in some areas. We put the switch in the island as that is where the food prep is being done and when finished the cook can just cut off the recessed lights as they wouldn't be needed any longer. The pendants then become the focus and generally would provide less of a glaring light. The switch for the pendants can be put anywhere. It could be put in the island as well, as long as the required switch at the entry door to the room turns on some light in the room.

In some configurations, the combination won't work. It just depends upon how the room is laid out and what functions the owner wants for the island.
