How to ripen a green (cut off) cocoa bean

Hello,

My son brought a cocoa bean from his trip to the Caribbean. We were told it would turn yellow and then it can be chewed on. We'd like to know how long it takes. Also, what can we do to help the process. It is big and it weighs about 1.5 lbs.
We are in Northern California.
