Ductwork through joist question

Hi,

I know this is possibly controversial...I understand the 1/3 rule etc. I'm seeking some advice before I make a huge/costly mistake.

I'm in the planning process of finishing my basement (plans not submitted as yet) and attempting to move some duct around to make my finished product a bit nicer and easier.

I borrowed this picture online while doing searches on the topic...apparently I'm not the only one with this issue. see picture

I need to get hopefully a 4" and a 5" duct through this joist. Does not seem to be area where cutting will cause any structural failure but i could be wrong.

worst case senario I can build my bathroom wall directly under where I'm proposing to cut through.

You can see the joist heading in opposite direction completely sits on beam for support.

No wall directly above proposed cut and approximately 10 inches between additional support above beam.

Ok its still on my mind....I can cut smaller rectange holes in the middle of joist, then connect with two round to rectangle connectors....

3.25 inch width through center of 10" joist a better option?

No way would I cut into that joist/those joists. If this is an important matter to you, and it certainly appears to be, get a Registered Engineer to look at your joists.
For my basement, I went with 10' high Superior Walls.All ducts and piping are at least 8' above the floor.

If your talking about cutting into that 6x6 on the picture, dont do it. That's a pretty beefy piece of structure probably holding a fair amount of load. Hard to tell orientation and what it supports from the picture though. I couldnt see anyone putting that large beam there just for the heck of it.
