Try a larger size needle. Maybe even a size 16 jeans needle.
If you have a single needle hole plate, also try using that.
Are you sewing on a Pfaff? If so, make sure the IDT is engaged and the blocks are feeding evenly. (Clean the dust out around the feed dogs.)
I do not think it is the heavy starch. My money is on the jeans needle and dusting.

Had no trouble sewing the blocks through fabric and paper backing so was surprised at the problem.

Much better this morning. Size 90 needle (denim), single hole throat plate, even feed engaged and feed dogs dusted.

Yay! If you have any more skipped stitches, don't be afraid to try a size 16 denim. I use size 16 Denim when I sew my bindings on by machine.
