Please help with peninsula counter support

I am planning a kitchen which will have a 15 inch overhang on the peninsula. There will be 24 inch base cabinets and the 15 inch counters are additional. Cabinets will be frameless by Ultracraft. KD tells me that we can do 12 inch overhang, but 15 inch will require additional structural support that should be in the form of a back wall to be built by our contractor. We are requesting all plywood construction. Another option is to add support posts on the peninsula ends.

Neither appeals to me. Peninsula will be 87 inch by 39 inch. If we build a wall, we shall loose 4 inches. Posts do not appeal to us. Are there other options we should consider? Is the KD accurate? How can 3 inches create such a structural problem? Please share your thoughts and additional information you may have. Thank you.
