Help with colors!!

I need advice - my marriage may depend on it!

My husband gutted our kitchen last week and now we are trying to pick flooring and countertops. It's a very modern house and we have new birch cabinets to install.

We are thinking of a dark cork floor but the debate is about whether to put in stark white countertops or do a darker grey or black countertop. Is white too light??? And if its a modern house should we steer clear of the typical granite and try something like a corian??

I think white counters with birch cabinets can look beautiful and very contemporary (first photo). But I'm not sure how they will look with a dark cork floor. That is the piece of the design that is throwing me. I think that with a dark floor I'd prefer either medium or darker counters, just so there is an echo in the horizontal planes in the kitchen (second photo). But let's see what others think, as I may just not be picturing the effect of the cork floors correctly. I do think that a quartz or corian (or concrete or stainless) counter (i.e. something modern and not too busy) would look great in a modern design. Quartz would be my preference.

Hi. Check Silestone for counters. Available in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures. Wrap the wall (backsplash) with the same material you choose for the counters. Medium light to dark---warm gray tones... Good Luck!

I also like white countertop with birch cabinets, but not crazy about the higher maintenance aspect of using white surfaces in the kitchen.

Love the pictures! The cork floor would be a grey tone of cork. It's quite pretty. Do we think the "plasticky" look of corian looks cheap?

Hi. Have you checked concrete counter tops? They're custom made, dyed and polished to your specifications. Ultra modern and beautiful. I would go with Steel Grey Concrete Top, very well polished. For the Back Splash I would use small clear Glass Tiles with hues of blue, aqua and pale green. For the floors I would look for a very dark coffee color. Cork floors are great. Good Luck!!

Yes! We were going to do concrete counters but apparently ikea cabinets are not strong enough to hold them :(

I'm sure you'll find the right counter tops.

I have light maple cabinets with a solid surface that looks like milk glass. I would have preferred quartz, but my builder only offered granite or corian like surface. I love my milk glass countertops and am sorry I didn't put them in the bathrooms. The advantage of having a seamless sink cannot be beat except by the most high end sinks available.

Cork is wonderful but I have read that the new corks do not last as the old ones do. I was once in Harvard's library where a cork floor had withstood decades and was looking wonderful still.

Grey cork sounds lovely. There is nothing wrong with a light kitchen. If you have an island, you might vary or reverse the color scheme on it.

I have color in my kitchen in artwork and rug and I love it.
