Good question! The microwave over the range or cooktop is one of the most inaccessible elements of this kitchen. In promoting Lifespan Design I often find that I can't get clients to agree to all of my suggestions. A solution that would make the microwave easier to access would be to install it under a raised countertop next to a raised dishwasher as shown in this photo. Bringing together the accessibility needs and the aesthetic wants of the client can often be quite challenging. I often wonder if designing so things are reachable for the challenged becomes a problem for the non challenged. I personally find it difficult to use a microwave that is installed in a location that makes me crouch or bend to use it.

And when you say raised countertop, at what height?

I like to raise a dishwasher 8"-12" off the floor, so the countertop is at 44"-48" above the finished floor. Your point is well taken that no design will meet the needs of everyone. The goal of Universal or Lifetime Design is not to design spaces specifically for those with mobility issues (Although we frequently do so with great success) but to design spaces that will serve the needs of the broadest possible spectrum of our population. There are also available motorized lifts that can raise and lower a sink or countertop section as needed to suit different members of the household.
