I don't think that would be odd at all. Not sure what your style is, but here are some photos. Some of them could be mirrors (definitely the third photo), but you can get recessed medicine cabinets in a similar style.

The trend iseems to be mirrors instead of medicine cabinets. But I prefer a medicine cabinet, I agree that I don't want to keep all my stuff in a drawer, the drawer has plenty of things like hairbrushes, hairdryer, etc without adding aspirin, toothpaste, etc. I don't think 2 medicine cabinets would look odd at all, to my way of thinking, the more storage space I have the better.

I love my gigantic medicine cabinet. It's not recessed but the sides are walnut like the vanity.

Shappy, in bathroom design, the wall-o-mirror look has been fading a bit, unless you cut holes in it and mount lighting right on top of the mirror, of course! Two med cabs would be lovely, whatever the style you choose. You can inset them into the wall or wall-mount them. You can even get the wall-mount look while still insetting them and get them 7 inches deep in the process. You can get them with lights or electrical outlets inside, with defrosting mechanisms for the glass, with locks, and even with refrigeration for special makeup or your morning yogurt! Then there are the ones with the TV set integrated so that the picture shows up in the mirror glass. I have a wall safe hidden behind a bathroom mirror.

They come with flat glass or beveled glass on the outside, mirrors just on the outside or mirrors on the outside and inside of the doors. Or mirrors on the outside and inside of the doors and on the back wall of the cabinet, as well. You can get no frame for the outside mirror, a metal band around the outside mirror, or an elaborate wooden picture frame look. Or metal picture frame. Or plastic.

You can also get a medicine cabinet with no mirror at all. $100 or $1500. It is an insanely diverse world you are entering into.

Maxmillion, I just got the mirror part for free. It sat bundled up for years. When I started learning about bathroom cabinets etc, I opened it up and saw that it had areas for the soft close hinges. I was at Fergusons and saw a Robern my size, and the lightbulb went off in my head, "I have a medicine cabinet mirror!" So I planned to have a frame made for it with my carpenter who does wonderful work. Note the lovely dovetailed joinery.

Oh and Nancy, I don't have a towel pig (from the kitchen forum?), or are you talking about my towel tree in this bathroom?? I bet you are now that I think of it. Yes this one is a beauty and a real splurge. You don't want it around little kids though cause they can pull it over with the yank of a towel. It was done in my other bathroom when it was in there waiting for this room to finish, luckily the 4yo DGS wasn't hurt, nor was the floor tile. There is a very very tiny dent on one of the hooks, but can't be found unless you know its there.

I had not noticed your towel tree. Very nice! Glad the little boy was not injured, nor your tile. Your med cab does indeed look very professional. That Robern mirror front was an excellent find.

I had considered Robern. I was yearning for the anti-fog feature. I found a great deal for ONE cab on Craigslist, but decided I still could not justify paying Robern prices for the second one. I ended up paying almost as much for Restoration Hardware med cabs on sale, though. I am piling up bathroom elements, getting ready to pull the trigger on this job! Working on the vanity top and sink right now.

Thank you for all the replies. A contractor bidding on job mentioned that I could just put the medicine cabinet on the wall about 3 feet to the left of the vanity. Then I guess I could get a big mirror over the vanity.
Why couldn't a carpenter just create a frame and then get a mirror company to glue a mirror in the center?? Having a big heavy mirror just hanging kind of scares me.

shappy: we are currently remodeling a dressing area that needs a big mirror (36 x 48"). We are planning to go to our favorite frame shop and have a custom wooden frame built. Then the framer will install a mirror inside the frame. You don't have to fear hanging a mirror (even a heavy one) as long as you make sure your screws go into studs. You can use D-rings - that will hold the mirror just fine.

Shappy, you really don't have to worry about a big mirror above both sinks. They usually attach them with construction adhesive, I believe. That baby is not going anywhere. You can always have the contractor put a frame around it once it is on the wall, if you like. Just design it so that there is room for the frame and chose the frame to match the other items in the room. If you go to a lumber specialty store (where they sell doors and windows) and tell them you want to look at the different framing materials available in store or in the millwork catalog, you will be able to see what your choices are. You can get it in a wood that is stain-grade (nice enough quality to be stained and finished so the wood grain is part of the design) or paint-grade (will only look good painted). If you want a metallic paint, those are available, too, in a multitude of real metal and fantasy metal colors.
