Dealing with a crazy neighbor

Condensed version: My neighbor aggressively
pounds on my wall when I’m doing normal things in my apartment. She has left a
passive aggressive note and refuses to read any reply I make. The Management
has told her they will evict if she doesn’t stop harassing me, and things are
still progressing, but no eviction has occurred. I am beyond frustrated and don’t
know what to do

Story: The neighbor has banged on my wall
consistently starting about a month after I moved in and it’s gotten to the
point that I can’t even tell what they’re banging about. At first it was things
like when I was on the phone in the bedroom, talking at a normal volume. They banged
when I was talking to my boyfriend in the bedroom about our plan for the next
day (again at normal conversational volume). They banged when I was unloading
my dishwasher. They banged when I was watching TV in my living room. And
finally, they even banged when I had paused the TV and was texting a friend,
making no noise whatsoever! All of the banging occurs on my bedroom wall, which
is in the back of my apartment, and separated by more walls from my kitchen and
living room. So they are banging on our one shared wall about things I’m doing
in completely different parts of the apartment.

It scares me because it’s so unexpected and the
pounding is so aggressive. It’s very loud and hard enough that I can hear the
wall shaking. It’s also a complete surprise because the amount of noise I’m
making when they do it is so negligible (or even non-existent). The TV was
never over 30 on the volume dial and was soft enough that I had to rewind what
I was watching to hear it. It’s never just a “knock knock” type of thing. It’s
always 5-15 loud bangs. Normally it happens when my boyfriend has been staying
with me, but when it happens when I’m there alone, I get nervous that they’re
going to come knock on my door or something and then I feel ridiculous because
I’m afraid of making ANY noise whatsoever.

I have called the management company many times.
They’re condos and the HOA has hired this company to manage the property. The
neighbor is this old woman who I was warned by the maintenance people when I
moved in. They called her the “crazy lady who used to live here” and that she
would probably try to contact me because she likes knowing what’s going on
everywhere in the complex). She has indeed approached me three times about
random things about my unit and once to let me know if she was ever being too
loud. I didn’t know what unit she was in at the time, but I’ve had no complaints
about the noise from other apartments. Now that I know it’s her, it’s super
ironic that she asked me to come talk to her if she’s too loud but she bangs on
my wall instead of following her own advice. The management encouraged me to
call the cops next time she does it and “do NOT confront her directly. She’s
off her rocker.”

I
sort of waited to see how it would play out and she left me this passive
aggressive note about how obviously I’m destroying her quiet enjoyment of her
home and instructed me to use headphones and only ever watch TV in the living room.
There was also some choice language about how I’m disturbing her sleep and
severely affecting her health.

I have only one Tv, and it’s in the living room
as far away from the bedroom wall as humanly possible and is only watched at
volumes under 30.

I rarely if ever do anything in my bedroom but
sleep and talk and if I do watch something on my laptop, I use headphones

Essentially, I’m already doing (and have been
doing since I moved in) everything she asked and it’s still not good enough.

I wrote her a note in return telling her this and that her
loud pounding on the wall is disturbing me and not a normal kind of noise
pollution from living in shared spaces. I asked her to stop. She returned my
note, unopened and unread *still in it’s sealed envelope, and wrote “Classy. Appreciate
your help” on it with the words underlined heavily and some crossed out
attempts at other illegible words.

Clearly she has ZERO interest in actually resolving anything
or even LISTENING to what I have to say, and this leaves me with no more
options on how to fix this myself. She seems to just want to harass me. Any
ideas?

Call the cops and keep contacting the management company. Ask them when they're going forward on eviction, as promised.

I had a neighbor like that once. They banged when I opened the oven door one night, I hadn't spoken to anyone or turned anything on (dishwasher, tv, etc.), and I got so fed up, I just stood in my kitchen stomping on the ceiling five or six times. I never did anything like that before and never again after, but they found my breaking point. Sounds like you're at yours.

I would put a stereo with the bass maxed out up against her wall and show her what loud is. LOL. I actually did that before, worked wonders. When I used to live in an apartment some idiot had a subwoofer turned on. So I showed them how annoying it is and turned my subwoofer on max, put it against their wall, and played some crazy music. They did not use their subwoofer again.

Technically you wouldn't be confronting her directly. Just playing music!

Keep a crazy neighbor action journal. Send all mail to the HOA and others registered. Demand acknowledgement in writing from them. Keep records. Buy her a noise canceling head set. Put some rhinestones on it.

How does it feel to be a prisoner in your own home?

Yes, keep a record of what you're doing when she starts, and how many times she bangs on the wall. It would be even better if you could start recording a video with sound.

Now, maybe she's hearing things, and thinks it's you.

But it makes no difference. She's harassing you and not allowing you to enjoy peace and quiet in your home. If I were you I would speak to an attorney to see what recourse you have.

    ^lol

I was going to say buy a tennis ball and bounce it off the wall 30 mins a day. But nevermind, do what he^ said

    Joseph...i like your style!

Funny & satisfying as it seems, I don't think a tit-for-tat response will get you anywhere if you want to get the law involved. Seems like that would only add fuel to the fire.

I am also wondering who or what's on the OTHER sides of that neighbor's apartment & agree that she may be hearing something from elsewhere & imagining it's coming from dtxgal. Has this possibility been investigated yet? Can dtxgal hear everything this neighbor is doing?

What a pain, tho! I used to share a (former industrial) loft w/ 2 other people & the downstairs neighbor was always complaining that I walked too heavily (& back then I weighed about 98 pounds!)

Haha - I was just reminded of a bus trip many years ago where the driver kept announcing over the intercom for whoever was whistling to please stop it, becoming more & more demanding each time. All the passengers were looking @ each other w/ raised eyebrows & getting very creeped out, because none of could hear it!

I'd document it and call the cops, because she's creating a noise disturbance. You shouldn't feel like you have to be silent and tiptoe around your own home.

Move, I lived with a crazy neighbor for (I'm ashamed to say) nineteen years, feeling if I moved he won, I was so wrong, I moved, never looked back, have great neighbors. He is still there harassing the neighborhood.

If you like it there, you will have to persist until she gets evicted. That will take documentation, letters and persistence, and probably months until she is actually gone.

If you are going to retaliate with banging, you should inform her in writing first, and run a video camera to capture her 'first strike' attacks. Otherwise she can claim you are banging on the wall first.

    I would move if possible.

There was an episode of "Holmes on Homes" where he added two layers of sound insulation drywall between two condos. It was a new condo where the people could hear everything going on next door. If the landlord would let you do it, it might be relatively easy if the only wall is a blank bedroom wall. I've had a bad neighbor before who promised to kill my cat if it bothered his cat again, and it is so horrible living next to a crazy person. You sound like a very kind, reasonable person. Don't be tempted to lower yourself to her level and retaliate. But do take action to get her the punishment she deserves.

Keep a diary of every disturbance she makes. If possible, put a tape recorder next to the wall that she bangs and record the banging, if you have time to start the recorder. There are some small ones that you can carry in your pocket and start recording fairly quickly. Do NOT try to contact her or send her any more notes. It would also be good to contact a lawyer or some legal association that looks out for tenant rights.

Banging on your wall is not acceptable and sounds like harassment to me.

When I lived in a flat in San Francisco, the neighbor downstairs from me called the police one night to complain about my roommate. The police woke me up, and when I went downstairs to answer the door, the woman who lived downstairs told the police that they should make my roommate buy a new bed because his bed springs were too noisy. The police told her to get earplugs or move. She eventually did move back to England.

Can anyone tell me why the squirrels in our back garden have gone since contractors have been building a store in our area! Would this noise move them on? I know how they feel. CumleyC

Once, I saw a National Enquirer headline, "Squirrels tell couple to leave Yellowstone Park". I think the squirrels will come back once the noise quiets down.

This is a much deeper problem. Noise is just the outlet.

This could be a medical issue she doesn't realize yet.

Cumly, maybe the squirrels went shopping.

I vote for move if you can at all do it. Your home should be your sanctuary, and it sounds like management isn't going to do squat.

You could also tell the owner/management that you plan to sue them for moving costs because they've not evicted this batsh*t crazy lady.

I am still trying to figure out why someone introduced squirrels into the thread, lmao.......

millworkman, are you seriously going to try and figure out why anything is posted on the interwebnetworldwide thing these days. Don't try, your head will explode. Your head exploding is not a good thing. Then you will need to start a thread on how to get exploded head off of ceramic tile grout.

No I am not really trying to figure it out as nothing surprises me today. I was actually just thinking to myself how the hell the thread drifted to squirrels, lmao.

Usually because someone accidentally types a new question into the reply box for an existing thread, or they truly don't know how to use a forum at all. Everyone has to learn some time.

Get a hard core Porn dvd, and the next time she bangs on the wall, put it on loudly and then you leave the place for a while. She'll figure out that banging on the wall doesn't get the response she wants.

OK...I know that would be really satisfying, but you can't do that. I'd hound the mgmt. company, and if they won't evict her, then I would threaten to sue the condo assn. if they don't let you out of lease. Or call the police for them disturbing the peace. She sounds unstable, and I think she might go all whackjob on the cops, so maybe they would take her in for a 72 hr hold.

    Yes, totally agree with Linda

    DO IT

Put a movie on ( of your own rating-- I would so something at least PG-13)

and loud and leave for dinner. I could do this at least 5 nights in a row and then I would knock on her door and actually talk to her and take a friend if I felt afraid.

That's a terrible idea. The neighbor will complain to management about the noise, and she'll be vindicated. Management would side with the bad neighbor after that.

Yes I can say I understand what you are going through. I have lived in my apartment for about six years. The first week that I moved in I noticed that every time I would turn on my light in the back the guy who lives next door would come out. I assumed at the time that he was coming out to smoke but over time I realized that he had seen my light turned on and was coming out for that reason. It turns out that this guy is a shut-in. He is in his mid-thirties and never leaves the apartment. He lives there with his mother who has lived in the apartment for a long time. He has been harassing me since I moved in. It started out slow, the coming out the back door when I would turn on my light to opening the front door when I would be unlocking my door asking me if he could help me carry things up, He would be at the front entrance to the bulding and would hold the door open for me. After talking to neighbors in the building it turns out that this guy is a menace to the building. He asks the neighbors for money, has even knocked on the maintenance guy who lives in the building asking for $20. He also steals packages in the building, opens them in the hallway, takes whatever is in the box and then leaves the box under the stairs.

I have never had anything to do with him or his mother but he has some sort of sick fixation on me. He used to sqeak what sounded like a dog toy every time I would come out of my apartment or when I would come home. I complained to the management office about this repeatedly and this has eventually stopped but someone in that apartment was doing it for a good four years. His MO as I would call it is to slam doors. He will slam the screen door when he comes out to smoke and then slam the screen door and the back door as he is going back in. I think there is something seriously wrong with him, like mentally. The police have even knocked on my door asking if they were home. They made a comment like 'you know they are from Mexico.' I called the management office and no policeman has knocked again. But he continues to harass me because I believe that is how he passes the day, he has nothing else to do and I have become his target. I believe he can see and hear me. He makes these popping sounds by my kitchen wall that is a connecting walll to their apartment. He also makes pounding noise by the wall. This guy is obviously a very sick individual and a guy in the building who knows him told me that he just uses him so that he will give him gas money (he no longer has a car) and that the guy is bad news. He told me that he filled up his car several times. I have decided to stay in my apartment because I am not going to let anyone chase me out of my apartment.

It sounds like you have the same situation where you have a woman who has stuck her nose in your business I woudn't let her chase me out. The suggestions that some people in this diiscussion made were good but I am guessing that she would enjoy it, it would give her something to do, like complain to the management office and what's that expression, some people are looking for any kind of reaction even if it is negative.

My obvious observation is ' what the hell is the matter with the police" in apparently several; of these situations? The behaviors some of you people have described are obviously nuts. If someone complains to them more than once describing these nutty and often violent behaviors they should be taken for a nut evaluation. Why should someone suffer interminably like this? Do the cops not understand their authority?

Maybe you can explain it to us.
