Change out the drapes to grommet top just under the ceiling to kiss the floor & try to match the yellow on the walls. Choose a large freize area rug to fit under the front legs of the sofa and chairs. Go off-white in color. Pick a round leather ottoman in tan, some simple side tables in chrome & glass. Add table lamps in mercury glass & round drum shades in black. Add large abstract art in subtle colors for two of your walls.

It makes it very hard to change the style of the décor with only an area rug, drapes & art.

Not much other than the curtains to do with the furniture type and the colors.You are better off leaving in that style and completing with a rug in the living room. I would add a coffee table, and some side table and lamps. With the colors I would not try a transitional.

Now If you were open to changing the colors, you could leave the yellow, add a medium grey on the bottom, change the curtains to a nice modern print with grommets

Can we see the fabric on the dining chairs? Adding a fun accent color, fresh fabric on the dining chairs, toss pillows, transitional coffee table and area rug will be help lean transitional style.

You could add a blue/lavender accents??? If the curtains have to stay, it would look best to keep the open.

Yup. Lose the curtains and at the very least paint the wainscoting all white-no red! To the Salvation Army with your throw pillows: http://houzz.com/photos/95394 your furniture could be a lot of fun with the right accessories and attitude. Cool rug, art are needed as well. Move things onto the rug once it arrives-that is the loneliest sofa in history.

When you get the tables/lamps/rug...make them transitional or lean contemporary style and you'll soon have a transitional space. Also, for art, go for an abstract style or matted print under glass for a more transitional style (as opposed to canvas art).

Yes, you do have a lovely home and beautiful furniture. I don't even mind the curtains (left open). By adding transitional rug/lamps/art/coffee table it will look transitional. The only thing that I think would help is to paint the dark red wainscoting a fresh white (or even lavender)!

I searched Houzz for "gold and burgundy" to look for color ideas and found these photos. If you keep the burgundy in the dining room, a rug with caramel colors would look good. That will give you a sort of autumn leaves look. I'd replace the red curtains and sofa cushions with either white or the wall color.

As someone mentioned, painting the lower part of the dining room is a relatively small undertaking, and would give you much more design options. Burgundy is a very traditional color.

If you're open to repainting the lower portion white (or gray), you cold go with a gray and yellow scheme which I think would look great in your room. I could see your room with a yellow, white and gray rug in a contemporary pattern, gray drapes, gray and yellow cushions. Re-cover the dining room chairs in a gray print.

Paint out the red wainscoting, pull the furniture into a conversation group, then go shopping at West Elm.

Alternatively, go shopping at Pottery Barn.

Why can't you change your wall colors? Even staying closer to traditional Is recommend a less jarring color combination. But let's say you truly can't change the walls. Try adding some whimsy to lighten the mood. Change to drapes to ones that don't have any ruffle. Someone mentioned grommet top drapes and that would be a big improvement. What kind of feeling so want? Calm? Cheerful? Dramatic? I often use white drapes when I want either calm or romantic. A black and white drape can be dramatic. Drapes with a geometric pattern can be fun. Art Nouveau prints make me cheery. Why do you want to go transitional? Are you bored? Want to update to sell? There are many possible reasons, but your answer might lead you into the right direction.

Here's an example of traditional that because of the calm wall color and addition of fun colorful prints is making the space move toward transitional.

Thank you for the great ideas. When we first purchased the furniture and decorated, I didn't really "know" what my style was. I really like the Transitional style and would like to have a room/rooms that reflect that style. Hubby likes the room colors, but I will see if I can convince him to at least change the wainscot and chandelier. Thanks again, your ideas were very helpful!!!
