The space is very dark, and the furniture is as well. However, a sectional will not solve your traffic and seating issues, because it won't fit as easily into the space. There is also not a clear traffic pattern around and through to the doors. move the wall sofa closer to the TV corner, move the dog crate to the opposite corner, and place the second sofa at a right angle to the first, you will open up the space, people will be able to see both the TV and fireplace, and traffic out the door will pass behind the second sofa. The recliner can be angled into place under the floor lamp for reading.

There are a lot of small items in the room, on the fireplace, on the shelf above the TV, on the dog crate. I'd remove them all for a more calm look. It will look a little bare at first but you'll get used to it. Then very carefully add back one or two items per shelf.

The wall art should also be simplified. Remove everything on the fireplace wall except for the piece directly over the fireplace.

The mirror is also contributing to the visual noise, because it reflects such a busy view. Instead, choose a single piece of art that's about 2/3 the width of the space between the windows. That's narrrower than the mirror.

Can the family photos currently on your white shelves go instead on a gallery wall in a hallway? Galleries are nice in a hallway because hallways are usually pretty boring, and the busy look of the gallery doesn't detract from the furniture and other art arrangements.

Taping everything a light color like light blue. Very light. Can I put in wood flooring? That would help a lot. Remove all the clutter. Get a comfortable wing back and another chair in rattan.move leather chair and love seat somewhere else. Replace coffe table with glass and iron. Think of airy, anything that lets the light filter in. Burlap shades for lamps. Paint TV console white.

Turn the TV recess into a closet - a family of four can always use more storage. Move TV connections to the wall where you have the mirror. This will also allow viewing by those in the kitchen or at the table.Try a 3-seater sofa where you can stretch out, a lounge chair for Dad, and two swivel chairs for the kids. Pets can take the perimeter areas. The closed and a big de-cluttering project would help with the claustrophobia!

If you want to keep all your furniture and the TV where it is, try the following layout:

- move the angled sofa perpendicular to the one along the wall so that it has its back to the french doors with enough space to open the door comfortably

- move the recliner to where the angled sofa is currently positioned

- position the ottoman near the two sofas,18 inches from each

- declutter the room (take out everything but the furniture and only put back things you need and a few selected decor pieces)

- get rid of the mirror, use a large scale art piece instead
