Basically, all fireplaces consist of a firebox, surrounded by non-combustible material, with a vent up the chimney. Everything else that you see is just cosmetics. That said, you may not be able to remove the rock from one to place it on the other, if that is what you are hoping, because getting the stuff off the basement fireplace may not leave it in any condition to be re-applied.

Go ahead and do it as mentioned it is just cosmetic to both not really sure what you mean by rock laminate is this just like a rock veneer which is just thin pieces of rock or is it actually a laminate that you would use for flooring attached to the surround.
