no, it's plywood boards and then wood battens

Is it 10' between the plywood and batten?

We did this same look for our renovation - contractor used an exterior grade MDO (medium density overlay) plywood for the boards and a smooth pine for the battens. Beautiful and very durable finish. Battens were 12 inches apart.

Is plywood a durable material for siding? Why was this chosen over hardieboard?

depends on where you live and the climate -- in California the plywood is great and sturdy!

hardieboard would have looked too plastic like for this use

Thanks! I'm in CA too (bay area) so I'm going to look into using plywood. Any specifics I should know about with regard to the material? I'm going to talk to my contractor about it but don't know if he's done this before.
