Brick is a great substrate for tile. I would consider demolishing the tile and putting a piece of stone there for a hearth, then tiling the brick surround.

If you wanted to go with a contempory look, you might consider doing a stucco finish over the vertical surfaces, using a hard trowel and intregal color. Then perhaps find a complementary piece of slab stone that would coordinate with whatever color your after. Just thinking........
