No Beefstakes please

Beefstakes like Cherokee Purple are absolutely delicious, however, they are much to big for one person to eat. Tried Dr. Carolyn's suggestion Earl Of Edgecomb which was the perfect size and a favorite. Suggestions please for smaller yet delicious varieties.

    Check "Rutgers".
It is relatively early, tastes good, and fruit size is about 7 oz.

Interesting that you mentioned Rutgers as they are the only new tomato seeds that I purchased for 2015. I purchased the original rather than the new improved. Have you an opinion on these?

I have grown Rutgers in the past, when I was in GA. I have bought seeds to grow it this season again. It is one of the classic favorite tomatoes that has been around since 1930s.

This year I am growing a colorful and yum mix of smaller, golf ball and somewhat larger size. My favorites from the past include Black and Brown Boar, Lime Green Salad and Jaune flamme. I am adding Super Snow White & Bulgarian Triumph.

A really nice smaller (baseball) size tomato is Eva Purple Ball.

My first thought was also Eva Purple Ball, one of only two varieties that have made my "grow every year" list. Very productive. I picked all of these from one plant one morning. I should note that's a really large bowl they're in. I'll describe them as tennis ball size.

Guess it is all in your perception but I have never considered Cherokee Purple a "beefsteak" since they average only 8-10 oz.

Sounds as if what you are looking for are the so-called salad aka saladette varieties. They are bigger than a cherry but smaller than any of the medium average sized tomatoes like Cherokee. As already suggested consider Jaune Flamme or Ceylon or Garnet. Even some of the oxheart varieties would meet your goal. I'd also agree on Eva Purple Ball.

But if they are "delicious" or not all depends on your personal taste buds. :)

Hey digdirt, Tatiana's refers to Cherokee Purple as a large beefsteak and that is why I presented it as such. Will look up your other suggestions, have read some good things about Jaune Flamme. Thanks.

Nitsua, Grow Cherokee Purple and Krim, love the flavor of both. Eva's Purple sounds like just the right size, will give it a try. Grew 9 varieties last year and plan to add a few more this year, one of which is the Original Indeterminate Rutgers. Thanks.

suncitylinda, it appears that Eva's Purple Ball is a unanimous recommendation. Will try it along with the Jaune Flame, am not familiar with the others but will look them up. Thanks.

Eva Purple Ball's oddity is in the name as there's really nothing purple about it. Its more of a dark pink/red. I like to think the person who named it was color blind. There's a very similar variety called Redfield Beauty, but I have yet to grow it. I'll add that Eva Purple Ball holds up very well in intense summer heat. 2013 and 2012 were the 4th and 5th hottest summers on record here and Eva kept producing while many other varieties withered and halted production.

Robinava - Glad you're trying Eva. It's a very productive and often recommended tomato; I have several seedlings of EPB growing right now!
