how about a departure from the red door? Maybe a bright blue door with red shutters, a bright buttery yellow door?

Sometimes we get so use to something we forget they are there. I would pull your overgrown bushes out this spring. It's a nasty job but go for it. Mulch the garden area and reintroduce plants. Go to a garden center - not box store. Hedges are dating exterior and hiding it! Then stand back and see what house needs!

I recommend painting the front door the same color as the shutters. Fill the space next to the door with a larger square English style wood planter painted the same color as the shutters and with a taller plant such as an egg or cone shaped box wood. Replace the lantern to the right of the door with a large scaled English style black lantern with seeded glass. Add matching lanterns on each side of the garage door. I think the brick landing and steps look fine with the house or you might consider white washing them. Replacing the tired looking plantings would have more impact then the costly resurfacing the brick with another material. Consider removing the shrubs as miacomerlady recommends and widen the planting strip on each side of the walk. Consult with a garden designer to develop a new landscape plan and plant recommendations. It will be money well spent unless you have the skill and talent to design the garden yourself.
