Challenging all lovers of quirkiness

I want to change ONLY my curtains and my rug to make my living area feel less of an "eccentric English study" and more fun and quirky. I'm attaching a picture of the current furnishings, a picture for over the mantel, a pillow I like and some drapery fabric. The pillow is leather but I would rather it be velvet or some other soft, tactile fabric. The drapery fabric is up for grabs but it was a "that's a good color" option. I'm open to prints for the drapery if I can find the right one. The picture exemplifies how I want the room to feel, a bit naïve with a touch of sass.

Thoughts anyone?

whynot.. WOW .. Quite the find. If I could only find a warehouse behind a country house off a country road behind some railroad tracks!

Oh, darn...just remembered we have no railroad tracks left here in my neck of the woods, have been all removed, now walking & 4 wheeler trails.

It's awesome to be able to use well loved pieces in your redo, really adds to the look instead of buying all new .. just for the sake of it.

And now...I have to find a different rug. I was so excited that I had it all done... I'll let you sit on my couch if you let me cry on your shoulder... :D

Pest here again .. how about putting a close up of the wall color in your idea book .. which is awesome by the way.. more people should do that! Really loving your choices so far.

Yep, definitely gonna get me a caramel sofa (if they still exist)!

I'll try....getting pictures of the wall color is a bit problematic but maybe I can find a paint color that matches it. The light and shadows change the color drastically. it's really quite the chameleon. In one area I can see the yellow in it...in others, I see grey or a hint of green...so confusing. Let me see what I can do.

    White marigold

This is as close as I can come and it's really quite close. I'll add it to the ideabook as well.

So added wall color to ideabook.

    Fabric

Laine...not pesty at all. I understand and should have thought to do that earlier. So different being on this side of the dilemma....lol

WooooHoooooo....I found the rug I wanted after spending all day searching online!!!! Have ordered it and hopefully I wasn't crazy for doing it! Now for the drapery fabric and getting the painting done. Whewww! what a relief!

Now Laine...about your sofa...shall we start looking?

whynot .. thanks for executing my requests! Your ideabook is great & the first one I have seen on dilemmas... makes it so much easier to relate the different pieces. Feeling kind of proud of myself that my suggestion to post pics together led you to your fabulous ideabook. I didn't realize that if I clicked on an individual picture that it would enlarge .. now even more impressed! And get to see an even bigger pic of "my sofa" .. sweet! Hopefully more people will follow your example & do the same .

Congrats on finding your rug .. determination always pays off.

Love Benjamin Moore colors & use them a lot. Have you decided on the drapery material.. green or leaves? Love all your choices .. this room is certainly going to be uplifting.

Can't start looking for my sofa yet .. boo-hoo!

Doing an update in my bathroom. Think that will be the most expensive room per square foot ..LOL. Been in my home for 43 yrs. so time for a redo all around. So hard to find what I want in a rural community... but I am "a very patient person".

Just revamped my bedroom & had my carpenter guy make a headboard out of an old antique door from my Mother-in-law's house, love it ,always wanted one like that. With all this snow we have been experiencing it is kind of difficult to get in the decorating mood.

You're so welcome Laine and yes, you should be proud. Ooooo...need to share your bathroom redo. And 43 years?? Oh, my! I've just been here 12 and thought that was a lot. I know how hard it is to find things, especially in small town (like mine) and rural areas like yours. That's why online ordering has become so important for me. I would never have found these things locally.

As for the drapes, I'm going to use both fabrics. Haven't quite decided whether just panels of each (as I did with the current ones) or what but I'm going to look for some ideas or get together with my daughter and figure something out. She has a unique way of looking at things and together we usually figure out something pretty cool.

Also, thank you so much for your support and help. Everyone has been so great about making suggestions and showing me new sites to search. Once I get everything finished, I'll post pics but it may be some time. I'm so excited about that rug!!! It's exactly what I think I need to finish the room. Wheeeeeeeee!

!st one ..Old- World-A-New eclectic. Valence would be nice in the quilted green material & leaves on drape part. I'm not very savy on this copy & paste so usually end up with more pics than I want to add...LOL

I like that too Lainie!!! You're going to get me soooo confused...lol...but that's ok...we'll get it sorted in the end.

I know.... I don't find that very often...lol. I always get strange looks on my choices until they all get put together.... :D

Oh my how right you are about that! I rarely second guess myself when I'm helping others...but with my own... But when I do find it... no one can talk me out of it....lol

Guess we are the "odd couple"..LOL

I seem to take a long time when redoing a room .. kind of a perfectionist I guess... that & just not being able to access things. Not saying that my rooms are perfect.. but perfect for me. I don't follow the trendy stuff (maybe too tight with my money) but like quality (at least it won't break down in 6 months).

I read your comment about the ottoman fabric and one of the hooked rugs designed/created by Claire Murray popped into my head http://www.clairemurray.com/images/files/R1272_Full.jpg. The mermaid would be a playful addition to your fanciful theme griffins, unicorns & peacock. Colors are a bit more saturated than the ottoman, but might provide a springboard to other drapery color choices..

Thanks sswinsjca for the input. I understand the fantasy aspect but, yes, the colors are a bit saturated and I'm going for more of a garden effect rather than ocean or sea. Check out my idea book Living room makeover to see a closer picture of the ottoman fabric and the other components of the room. I'm collecting drapery treatments atm so don't be confused by those rooms. :D Thanks again!

whynot ... Hey, is that a "new"leaf print fabric, looks different than before ..or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

    User thanked Lainie D'Eon

It's a new one. My daughter thought the other wasn't going to work. I'm rethinking a bit on the fabric. She also hates the rug ...*shrugs*... but it's ordered and I'll see when it gets here whether I need to send it back. Definitely not going as planned... *sigh*

Wow, your daughter has a good eye .. finding the new print. I do like it more than the previous one! Has more...???? I don't know what! Think the background in this fabric is a bit darker, which seems to go better with the darker furniture that you have.

This may seem a bit "crazy"... wondering if you could show a pic of the room with the current round rug removed & the curtains (if possible). Could put the curtains back up after the pic has been taken.

    User thanked Lainie D'Eon

This will allow us to focus more on the things that are staying in the room... does that make sense? or just making sense to me??

    User thanked Lainie D'Eon

I'd need help to move everything around and get all that down. So...probably not anytime soon. Maybe next weekend. My sons are coming to visit so they might help me with that. And actually, I found the new print. She just didn't like the other one. And yeah, it has a darker background but I'm not totally in love with it. I really want to lighten up not go back to a darker color so now trying to find something she and I can agree on. She doesn't live with me so it's not like she's going to have to look at it all the time but usually if we both love something, I'm happy with it. I really love the rug and she doesn't so I'm a little concerned about that. She's thinking it's too modern but that's what I'm wanting to do so I don't know...we'll see.

I think the reason that I like the new material better is because it has a bit of the sofa color in the leaves.. & you know how I "love" that sofa..LOL

Like your choices. Especially the leaf pattern. Please share the link for that fabric. I haven't read all of the comments, but it will be fun to see the "after." My only suggestion would be to hang the drapes as high as possible. I consider drapes to be the "icing" on the cake. My favorite! I live in the country and rely on the Internet for shopping, also. Downsizing has been a big problem, but we are getting there.

smh225, thanks for the encouragement. If you click on Living area makeover, you'll see everything in one spot. For most of the "contenders", if you click on them, they will take you to the site where I found the fabric or idea or whatever. I have two "leaf" choices and had almost been talked out of the first one but I think I'm leaning back to that. The whole idea of changing out the things I'm changing was to make the room feel different and I think the second "leaf" pattern just keeps it feeling the way it was. Also, I'm really torn between two of the window treatments so I'm having to mull things over a bit now. Any input you have will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, the first leaf pattern will give you a fresh start. I think the new rug will make a huge difference in the room. It will start a whole new conversation. Can't wait to see it in the room.

Thank you! I was beginning to feel a little crazy for liking that. Did you notice the gold/black window treatment with the white sheers? I'm considering that using the leaf pattern where the gold is and binding it with something as yet to be determined with some type of sheer, possibly something like this with a tiny stripe.

So, ordered the rug and it was too small and too dull! Have added different rugs and fabrics to Living area makeover and am thinking I may be heading in a better direction. Red rug is available in 8' round which is size of current rug. Room views from Dona Rosen and Tina Barclay are for inspiration. Thoughts anyone?

whynot.. WOW!! LOVE the new "REDS" especially when paired with the sofa .

I can see usingsubtle red patterned throw on your brown chair & a hint of red in the pillows for the sofa.

Maybe it's just me .. but just gotta say it .. the rug is round & the ottoman rectangular ( seems a bit.. "I don't know"). Maybe a rectangular rug would suit the look better .. & may be easier to find the perfect size. Do you have another rug "laying around the house" that you could try for a try?

Loving the use of your idea book for the samples .. just makes my life "so easy"..LOL

Hope you don't mind ... I suggested using that approach with another Houzzer... I think you have hit upon a " trending idea"... Check out her ideabook... "Please help me decorate".. (Jenna Carr)

Thanks Lainie! Actually I love the round rug. That was one of my problems with the other one. I love the way the round one gives me an automatic conversation area. And I kinda like the square peg in the round hole...lol. They do have the red rug in a square but both my daughter and son felt the round would be better. Probably looks a little different in the pics from the feel it has actually in the room.

I feel sooo much better with my reds too. I must have some kind of weird mental problem but I NEED reds around me. I feel much more alive...(color of blood maybe?) lol. My grandson picked a fabric for the curtains and it is gorgeous but was a real blow to the pocketbook at over $100 a yard. Maybe a pillow from that...lol. I must say though, the boy has good taste.

I'm happy about the ideabook making things easier for you. I'll check out the other thread as well. Thanks so much for your input!

Hi Ann. Check out ideabook Living room makeover above for current choices. Rug was too small and too blah so returning it. Ordering red round tomorrow with curtain fabric.

Lainie, he'll be 12 in April. And yeah... he better! Though he says he wants to be a paleontologist so not sure how much money that's going to bring in... :D

Get rid of the curtains! Open up the house with blinds and let the light in! Might even be able to find a blind with a light tint! Once you get away from curtains, you will never go back to those dust catchers. Enjoy the natural look and the beauty of nature, maybe even the beauty of your neighbors. Bring the outdoors in and enjoy the different seasons!

Changes so far. Still waiting on painting to be finished. What I've ended up with is not at all like I thought but I'm really happy at this point. I wound up buying a new rug for my guest room and playing musical rugs to bring the guest room rug into the living room and moving the round rug to another room. While I realize the living area rug could be a bit bigger, I'm okay with it for now and really like the style. This has been a much slower project than I expected. Thanks for all the ideas from everyone.

Thanks everdebz. Still toying with some things but I'm loving the curtains. It's hard to see from the picture but the sheers have horizontal gold metallic threads running through them. They don't scream metal but they have just a touch of sheen that brings a little more life to them. They are long enough to hang at the ceiling but I need help for that so am waiting for some taller, younger male children whom I birthed to show up and do that for me. :D A few other tweaks are on the drawing board but I'm happy with the progress thus far.
