Here are what we've narrowed down for fabrics......what do you think?

Should we choose blue or taupe, ie stone?

BTW, we will re-paint both the family room and kitchen/nook areas once we figure out everything else. Currently it's painted RH Silver Sage.

Here are some different layouts our sales associate at Mitchell Gold did for us.

Our TV is above a console, mounted on the wall (on a swivel mechanism) to the left of the fireplace.

PS the Hunter can be ordered with either the stainless or wood legs. The Desmond comes with just wood options.

Also, the Hunter sectional we're considering is one with just the chaise lounge (not the full L shaped sectional)

If the furniture arrangements are to scale, I prefer arrangement number 3. Number 1 is my least favorite.

I'm with Ann. I vote the Desmond "stone". Looks great and will be stylish a long, long time.

Desmond....truly timeless. And I know Stone seems safe, but safe is GOOD!

Thank you Ann.....that's what I was thinking too but my family is pushing for a sectional this time....and the Desmond isn't offered in one. :-( the MG sales associate also thinks that our top contender for side chairs (pictured above) goes best with the Hunter....do you agree?

Both are very comfy...especially considering that it isn't easy to find that in these low profile type sofas these days. Is it mainly the stainless legs that's making it too "trendy" you think? We plan on getting it in wood legs, if that's the one we go with.

If a sectional (wouldn't be my vote), I think you need a full L shaped one (with two close to equal sides) along with just two side chairs.

@ Ann, yes they are supposedly to scale per MG.

#1 is 106" sectional

#2 is 90" sofa

#3 is 98" sofa

Fyi - the sofa shown in the actual picture in the original post is 88" I think.

I am for the Desmond sofa. Since you said side chairs will be Mid-century Mod in style, it will compliment them (once selected) nicely. I am a fan of the indigo fabric! The stone is of course nice, but a very safe choice. The navy is a rich base from which to begin laying out the rest of the room.

As for the layouts, I can honestly say they are not to scale just based on looking at the size of the furniture relative to the size of the fireplace. An 8’ or larger sofa or sectional would be much wider than the fp/hearth.

If you give me the room dimensions and the width of the fireplace (measure the hearth or mantle box) and I can do the same layouts to scale very quickly for you.

Since the Desmond is getting 100% of the votes so far, I want to see it side by side with the Petrie chair. And, since I fell in love with the Crate and Barrel Grayson last week, I'm tossing it in the mix for fun. Just ignore it if it isn't a chair that appeals to you. Ugg, my text ended up in the middle - I hate when that happens - I'm still struggling with the new Houzz changes.

My family loves our sectional! My kids are similar ages to yours...Everyone always ends up together so we appreciate the extra room:). And I would totally go for the blue! It's a modern color choice without being too trendy. Beautiful space.

Meant to say I also think the L shaped sectional would work well if that is an option. And I would probably just do 2 chairs with that configuration.

Just thought I should also post pictures of what other pieces we have in the adjacent rooms -- in case this makes a difference with opinions.

Pic 1 - style of our breakfast nook chair -- but ours is in a taupe fabric with white finish

Pic 2 - our breakfast nook table -- looks pretty much like this in Espresso with nickel finish at pedestal

Pic 3 - our media cabinet on left side of fireplace plus same cabinet on right side - in a "Stone" grey/smoke/taupey finish

Pic 4 - our counter stools -- but ours is in a light gray leather with black legs

Love all of your furniture! Just noticed that the raised hearth was partially visible in one of your original pictures, so the sofas in the MG plans may be to scale. Sorry!

You could do indigo on the chairs for sure!

@ Adalisa, thank you so much for your input. I'm glad you like the indigo/blue. And good to hear that you think the Desmond could go with MCM type furniture too.

Btw, our fireplace (including the box) is approx. 90 inches wide....so maybe it is to scale?

Desmond works much better than Hunter with these other nearby items.

Yeah, I think the blue is fine if you like it better (or blue/patterned chairs as Darzy commented).

Avery, I know we discussed it in one of my dilemmas recently, but have you seen Grayson in person? Man, I loved that chair when I saw it!

Ann, was thinking we would either go with stone sofa or sectional and blue chairs or vice versa.....so I'm right there with you and Darzy on that.

Also, of course any other suggestions I'm open to.....even other sofa/sectional or chair suggestions! I'm not married to these options only! :-)

@ Meg, thank you for your reply too. Yes, with young kids it does make sense to do a sectional. I have just been hesitant to do one as an "L" Shape since I love that more "open" look of 2 chairs backing up to a window wall so much. But now that you and Ann have suggested it, I'm going to give it some serious thought!

@ Ann, yes I was at C&B last week and sat on the Grayson chair myself. Loved it! I didn't realize until afterwards how well it would go with the breakfast nook chairs I already have too. It's on my radar.....

I like to see shapes quietly repeated throughout a home. I noticed, like you,your Greyson chair mirrors the ones you already have. That is great.
I like the style of the Desmond sofa better as well with the style of your home. But I could picture a sectional as well, since you already have other sofas now in your other rooms...

Yep, it would go very well with your nook chairs and is a nice contrast to a rectangular sofa as you can see in the Crate and Barrel pic with the rectangular sofa and Grayson chair. Softens everything a bit while still being very modern. I like the choice of the oval table in that same Crate and Barrel pic for the same "softening" reason.

You're absolutely right about that softening affect Ann. See, this is why I need your and other Houzzers help. There's this blindness that overcomes me when I'm trying to decorate my own space!

Also, maybe I'll have to re-look at that C&B sofa shown in that picture. That's their Rochelle sofa and that one does come in a sectional too. In fact, I was looking at that one and the Petrie both as sofa and sectional options before we narrowed down to the 2 MG's. But it may be worth reconsidering....what do you think about the Rochelle and Petrie as either sofas or sectionals?

@ Ann, Since you brought it up, I'll need your help on coffee and side tables too when we finally get to that point, if that's ok..... :-)

Try Monarch Sofas - they can customize any of their different sofa styles to any size and sectional configuration, along with options for fill, legs, how the seams are finished, nailheads, etc. Made in the USA, and prices are great. Based out of CA in a few cities and have a Dallas showroom. Lots of their work is showcased on Houzz - the link is on the website. :)

I do very much like that C&B sofa pictured, but I love the Desmond (looks like everyone that has posted does). I especially love the Grayson chair, but that could just be my personal taste. I liked the Grayson in all the many groupings where they had it in the store! It provided such a nice, modern softness without ever looking matchy matchy with various sofas. It was very comfortable too and many of their stock fabrics were great for that chair. I do also think a regular L sectional with two chairs would work well if it wouldn't block any doorways or anything and fits the space well. With a sectional (or even just a sofa), you might want a sofa table to soften the look of the back of it depending on which direction you'll see the back of it from and if there's room for a sofa table. I think I like Rochelle a bit better than Petrie. I think Petrie is just a little bit too MCM for your other furniture (dining, etc.) and rochelle is just a bit better complement. But, if going with just a sofa, don't eliminate Desmond - it's beautiful! I actually like the C&B coffee table pictured quite a bit, but not with a matching side table, lol:). But, there are lots and lots of nice coffee tables and you'd need to decide if glass would be a good choice with kids. I have a glass side table but I've heard they can be quite a bit of maintenance as a coffee table.

Hi Avery! I looked at the Hunter Sectional on MG's site and it doesn't look appealing to me. Take a look at their Clifton Sectional, I like its clean lines. Another suggestion, if you decide to go for a Sofa, pick blue - it will look great. On the other hand, stick to taupe for the sectional.
