Definitely take out the cabinets, but you might not have to move the stove if you just make the bar top at the height of the existing half wall and get tall bar stools. If the bar top was 2 feet wide and higher up, it would be difficult for someone to accidentally touch something on the stove.

Getting rid of the scallops, removing the hardware, patching the holes, and putting new hardware in the proper location on the doors and drawers would be a big improvement.You could add a nice size countertop to the family room wall, just on the other side from the sink. You seem to have room for an island, but it has to run lengthwise in the space and therefore wouldn't work for seating without people being in the way of either the cook top or the sink.

Lucky Neville: I think you are probably correct. Any suggestions for venting the stove if I take down those cabinets? It currently vents to the outside thru a vent hidden behind cabinet doors. Thanks.
