Hard to tell because your photos are dark. Turn on all the lights and shoot from the windows towards the center of the room and see if that's any better.

From what I can tell the furnishings and colors are simply too heavy. Sprucing it up would be relatively easy.

Are you thinking of painting? If so I would lighten up the wall color.

Then do something with the curtains. Replace the drapes with something lighter. Roman shades maybe. Or even wood blinds.

I think I like your rug but not 100% sure.

Your furniture may look ok against a lighter backdrop.

That cabinet is massive. If you want to keep it, it needs lights on the inside.

Overall you need more artificial light sources. Some recessed lighting, more ambient lighting.

Add some color and something more interesting in the breakfront.

I think the keyword is Storage. Grover was showing you Decor. You can still do this to your cabinet, but style the shelves with 1/3 books (hardcover only) 1/3 large decor items, 1/3 open space. You might try a storage ottoman instead of the coffee table. Between that and the shelves behind the cabinet doors you could store a lot of books.

Well, you can still add color.

What ARE you willing to do? If you want to enliven the room, you have to be willing to make changes.

What about taking the doors off the cabinet???

First-You have a lovely sense of decor as well as some very fine pieces in that room. To lighten it up. simple...I would paint the walls a nice white.

Before you say did i just read paint the walls white?.

You did. Your sense of style is without the entire room. It works just that wall color makes it to heavy. a nice warm white wall color will make it really come to life

Finish it off with a table decor of white candles. It will bring that wall sconce out as well. Simple and easy to do. Not that hard on the budget...and if you do not like it. Out about forty bucks and a few hours. Good luck with the decorating project. ;)
